Ive got a drawer full of hammers in my box and it is now overflowing. I am just wondering if you guys have come up with any creative ways to either hang or sort your hammers. I have all types of hammers for auto metal working and general construction. Thanks.

i have one dedicated drawer for hammers. it's full. if the head is big and flat enough to stand on its own, like a 5lb sledge or something, i have it on the floor next to a roll away.

I have mine in 3 drawers. Mechanicing 'mers (ballpeens etc) in the toolbox, body hammers in the autobody toolbox & bashing the **** out of things hammers in the welding toolbox.
I have 1 claw hammer, it's on a shelf someplace.

in my box, flat on the bottom of the drawer in a head to toe type configuration (think 69 :D ) or in the cart, stood up on the hammer face in the same type of way.

1st off I'll say we have the tools hanging on peg boards at work and I hate it. The tools aren't all concentrated on the peg board either, there are little collections in various cabinets here and there. I've tried to convince them to get a roller so we can have all tools together and move everything where needed instead of piling what you think you need in a carry box and lugging that to the equipment you're working on. You're always running back for things you end up needing that you didn't think you were going to need. Now that I've vented I'll answer the question.

My work shop is tiny so there is no need to roll anything to get to anywhere. My hammers were in drawers a few weeks ago but I got tired of trying to fit them back in place when I was done with them so I hammered nails in the wall so the heads were suspended between the nails. Did the same in my welding area.
It's not as neat as Jack's above but then neither is my workshop. I like it better than keeping them in drawers thats for sure and it frees up valuable space in your boxes.

You just need more boxes. For me to hang it on the wall, the tool must either be too large to fit in a drawer, such as a long handled dead blow hammer or only be used at that workstation. For instance, the hacksaws and some hammers are on the wall above one of the vises.

When it comes to hammers, I've probably got more than fifty around the three workshops, sorted by use. There are ball pein, cross pein hammers and hand sledges on the wall above the vises and the anvil, chipping hammers with the welders, claw hammers in the carpentry box, brass, soft face, dead blow and so on in the automotive boxes, sledge, wedges and splitting maul with the wood pile, tack hammers and wooden hammers at the woodworking bench.

Jack Olson-I see KROIL! Great Stuff, and about the most inventive way to store hammers, but I prefer my metal working stuff in the roll-around! ;)

If you have a peg board system then buy those large double hooks (make sure they are at least 6inches long or longer);then just take 4 or 5 hammers and put them oh that hook. I have over 100 hammers and they all hang up very nice.

i giggled when i read this. I dont know how many times i have seen young/new guys grab a claw hammer out of their modest box and attempt to use it on mechanical stuff. This generally makes me ask them if they are carpenters--which makes them puzzled. thus the explanation of hammers do's and dont's followed w/ me giving them a hammer to keep if i like them or sending them to hf to buy the $15 set to get them started

as for the initial question-- i keep the big 5 lb dead blow beside the box standing up. the others i keep in one long drawer where i interlock the heads/handle length to fit them in neatly. never stays neat though

the big 5 lb dead blow
The 5# is a medium if there is an 11# beside it ;>)

Since they are soft and I hardly ever have to carry that big a stick, I stick them both in the side handle of the big box.

i have two hammers at work. a medium size ball pein hammer, and about a 3 lbs engineer's hammer (sledge on one end, flattened cone on the other)

i bought both at a garage sale for $2 about 4 years ago, and had to put handles in them. i think i'm in to both hammers for less than $10.

i store them on the side of my portable tool cart, hanging from exhaust clamps.

Pulling this old one back up, I just posted a video of all the hammers I had at hand in the shop.

https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=_4yXO_qH4ko

And came to the conclusion while filming that I need a better way to store all of them. There are a few good ideas in this thread but what else have you guys come up with.

My biggest issue is that I have no open wall space for peg board or such, don't want to tie up several drawers with them and a cart takes up valuable floor space.

Right now I am think of adding a short wall to build a rack for the hammers, and cordless drills.

In a drawer in my work cart

But I like the idea of building a rack for the hammers. The pictures look good... easily accessible too

Feeling this old thread has a lot of potential.

Recently purchased a multitude of hammers with no idea on how to efficiently store them.

I built several racks that are attached to the wall. The hammers are grouped to their function and use frequency. One rack is on the cart by the welder. It’s the one for serious attitude adjustments.

Right next to the main bench. Hammers & pry bars. Longer handled sledge hammers and long pinch bars are over in a corner.

I tried weeding out the collectible from the often/sometime use and this is what I came up with as to not part with any. Recycled 60’s secretary file hanger caddy.

Right, so I got my hammers.

Somehow, storing them circular around a bucket/cylinder would be a nice way and easy to access.

I made a vertical divider that mounts tight the front or back of the drawer in my tool chest. Each slot has room for two hammers stood on end. Takes up much less room!
