I have a bolt bin with different bolts in each bin. I have a few different sizes in some of the bins. Trying to figure out an easy way to label the bolts so other people can read them when I'm not able to get to them. How do you have yours labelled???

mine change all the time as needed, but I use frog tape and a sharpie. Some labels include drywall screws, lock washers, carriage bolts, etc.

I don't have enough of any one fastener or anything to be like 1/4"-20 phillips head screws.

I use a Dymo label maker with the plastic tape in it. Be warned, once you start labeling, you will not be able to stop!

This was as I was starting to set up my little hardware store in my garage hence not everything labeled yet. Was still sorting.

I took a slightly different tact with my electrical stuff. Labeled and hot glued a connector to the drawer front as well.

I have dedicated plastic pull out bins on a metal rack that has all the bins labeled using a Brother self adhesive label maker machine. Looks professional and is easy to read.

They sell magnetic labels online that I bought for my tool box, but for my nut and bolt bins I use a labeling machine I got from work. They can be purchased cheap on eBay. Here's a pic of it.

I just started a thread on this last month. I was looking for a way to relabel all of my bins. Before the had a sticker label that you had to write on. But they faded, would soak up any kind of residue and started to wrinkle and come off, as the adhesive wasn't very good.

After reading through the ideas and suggestions I received in my thread I decided to go with a Dymo 160 label makers. It's handheld and really makes good labels.

I cleaned off all the old stickers and put on new Dymo labels. From my experience so far and all the reviews I've read they seem to be really great.

I've found the label maker and the cartridges for them at my local Staples and Walmart. If you decide to buy in store be sure to have them compare price to Amazon. I managed to get the label maker for less that half of what both stores wanted. I also got the cartridges each for about half of store price.

Here's an idea of how they look of my storage bins

Dymo labels for bins and drawers. If the stuff moves the label is stuck to card stock that fits in the slot on the bin. My handwriting has been called bad by multiple doctors.

For stuff that is more visual like drywall screws and nails I just hotglue an example to the front. Pops off an acrobin if needed

Small bits like crimp connectors are in Plano boxes organized by size. When I am doing electrical I like being able to take the whole thing of blue connectors to the work since I will likely need several. The planos are labeled if needed (most are pretty obvious if they are clear)

I bought a mid level brothers ptouch labeler for 40 bucks. It's awesome.

Also bought some 3/4 wide magnet strips to put labels on my new tool box so I can remember where things are.

I label mine
But I worked for various label companies and will have to put labels in my will.
I have seen the sample hot glued to the label in addition to the discription idea in a commerical shop.
The super said it was a great teaching aid for the new kids that didn't know what the stuff was called.

Are the items at least related? Like could you just label as "Misc 1/4-20 bolts", or something like that?

Otherwise you might need to make multiple labels for a bin, if it has the room to fit multiple labels on the front.

Suggested labels:

Rusty Bolts - All Sizes
Assorted Un-Sorted hardware
Helifiknow what's in here
Beer
Medical Brownies

You get the idea!

I have thought and thought. But I keep coming up with something retarded like this.

5/16 bolt 1 1/4 - 3 1/4

3/8 bolt 3/4 - 2 1/2

3/8 bolt 1 1/2 - 4

Every time I do it on my P touch it looks like **** and can't stand it!!!

Try
3/8 BOLTS <3" or 3/8 Bolts up to 3"
3/8 BOLTS 3" - 6" or 3/8 BOLTS 3 to 6
or 3/8 BOLTS (short) 3/8 Bolts (long)

If your CDO then 1368 blost

Yes I have but then it doesn't look right compared to everything else I have already labeled!

I'm probably the worse disorganized OCD person you will ever know. I have no rhyme or reason and I have clutter in the garage!!!

Find a website to create QR codes (like http://scansfer.com/). Generate a QR code with a generic text message that contains the contents of the bin. Print the QR code onto sticker paper and place it on the bin. Now, you can scan the code with your smartphone and see the contents

I have small plastic bins. I took a new fine tip Sharpie and clearly printed it on the front.

Call me old school, but wouldn't it be faster to just open the drawer?

Sort things? Seriously? Mine are all thrown in glass pickle jars that are screwed to the underside of my cabinets. That way I have to dig things out every time I need them. Sorry, but sorting stuff out takes all the fun out of looking for them, right?

I don't think you thought this through. Imagine you need some small part or fastener and you have dozens, or even hundreds of drawers. You know the general area where it might be, so now you start scanning drawers to find it? I'm pretty sure you would eventually scan the one you're looking for but it will probably take a lot of time compared to a visual scan of printed labels.

High tech is not always the most effective solution.

Blue painters tape and a sharpie for now.

I'd like to get a label maker for smaller bins (like the flip down container for screws/nuts/small connectors/etc, but not in a hurry)

I went to an Estate Sale once and the guy had HUNDREDS of Glass Jars screwed to surfaces all over the basement. They were numbered and he had a book with a cross-reference to help him find what he was looking for.

I have 40 or so Lay's jars in one the the drawers of my storage cabinets. I HATE that they went from a paper label to a plastic label as its MUCH harder to remove the label.

I scuff the lids and paint them white - then use a sharpie to write a label on the lid ie 1/4-20 . . .

Cheers

Jim
