How do you keep your power cords organized????

Mates....

Still on my "Organization Project" for my garage, one thing annoys me: how to keep power cord extensions (or similar item) organized????

Could somebody please show me pictures as a reference, because i cannot think in anything for it.

Just, please, keep in mind that we do not have available in Brazil that power cord reel which I've seen so much in garages abroad.

Any help or helpful ideas?

Jesus: only now i've realized that the thread is at the wrong area (please forgive me :rolleyes2)

I use a garden hose hanger for my 100' 10 ga cords. You could get some "junk" wheels and bolt them to the wall to hold some cords.

Junk wheels it's not a bad idea at all...
The main problem is the fact that Brazil has a different wall (E.U. model) and a few equipments that I've, use US model.
Therefore, i've some many differents power cords, with different plugs and lenghs.
So, a easy way to grab one of them would be nice...

But i didn't forget the wheel idea

Re: How do you keep organized your power cords????

space is a premium in my garage.
i used to think winding up extension cords was such a mundane task. i hated it.
and i tried a few cheap "cord wrap" solutions which saved me no time or effort.

other than the cord reel,
i have appreciated the art and patience of just winding-up my 100 foot cords by-hand and hanging it on a peg or hook. -- each time I did it, i got better and better.
i don't think about it anymore.. it's not an art, but it felt like it.

If you want something to build, i felt this looked useful..
edit: this is not a solution i built or use.. but i may in the future.

Simple and cool

I like that!
Red painted would be a quite nice set of them on my wall

that bottom arm pivots upward to allow quick removal of the cord.

If you know how to coil a cord (or rope, etc.), its not such a big problem. If you're coiling the cord around your elbow, you're doing it wrong. A new, or mistreated cord will need to be trained to behave. Also, crappy cords are slow learners. ;)

I just coil mine up and hang em on hooks.

100% ^

I coil mine up (one loop and twist at a time), Plug the Ends together and tie them off using a piece of Rope attached at the Male end of the Cord so it isn't in the way while plugged in. The Rope also works well for lashing 2 cords together so you don't have to tie the Cords in a knot so they don't come apart if you are working on a Roof or dangling the Cord.

Nobody that works for me is allowed to coil my Hoses or Cords. All it takes is one time of mistreating them to train them wrong. Then it is a hassle the rest of the Cords life.

I do not understand the Daisy Chaining of Cords. It is not good for the Cord at all. Winding a Cord around your elbow is just plain stupid. I do not condone either of these methods. This is why nobody rolls up my Cords or Hoses for me.

Old mig wire reels will hold a 100' cord as well. I like to get the metal wire reels and you can hang them on a peg. I also use them for airlines and garden hose.

I have one of my 100 footers coiled up inside a 5 gal. bucket.. Makes it easy to store and roll back up.

i cut and join sections of 1/4'' o-ring stock - to make a 6''ish o-ring. use that to secure my coiled cords. works perfect, no boogers or knots.
used to coil and knot them like Jeremy

+1 ! (except for that loop and twist; I can't get the hang of it)

I wouldn't exactly call it "rope". I use 1/8 - 1/4" (5 - 10mm) braided cotton or nylon line.

Re: How do you keep organized your power cords????

does anyone here actually do this?
i don't like the looks of it and believe it takes more storage space in the end.

Extention cord, no but I do have a section of 550 cord in my bunker gear that I use a similar method to coil up.

Re: How do you keep organized your power cords????

Thanks fellas for the help.
Last night i was putting things in order, fixing new tools and i saw a long clapboard (don't know if this is the correct name for it)
Anyway, i've mixed the idea of Luvit with a more rustic solution...

I coil everything over-under, I did sound, lighting, and video throughout school and it makes things much easier!

Re: How do you keep organized your power cords????

I hold the plug in my hand and then wind the cord around my elbow and back to the hand in a continuous loop. When done I use a zip tie to pinch the center into a figure 8 and then I throw them all in a bin on the bottom shelf.

LOL! We get picked on until something breaks!
here is an old picture of how we had all the cables organized when I worked at the Student Union at UT. If they are badly coiled it's because I did not use them :p

Loop and twist, then have nylon cord at the male plug end that I tie it together with.

Re: How do you keep organized your power cords????

I am surprised nobody has shown the "figure eight loop method of storing a cord".

http://www.noob.us/miscellaneous/no-tangle-extension-cord-storage/

I've always heard that called "The Electricians Roll". Maybe a regional thing; dunno.

I've rolled my cords up like that before, but was just never a big fan of it in the shop. On a service truck it worked out ok.

If someone ever tries to unroll it and doesn't know where to start, they always tie you up a real nice knot! :-/

Re: How do you keep organized your power cords????

looks like a waste of time

If I had the patience and time to do that, I think others might think I have too much time on my hands and or am bored.

I don't use extension cords very often, but I have used industrial grade Velcro to bind the cords together. Not exactly the professional way of doing this, but worked.

Yeah.. I just want to use my extension cords.
I don't want my extension cords to be a conversation piece each time someone looks at them.

Luvit: Yeah, I could see that. Can't say I've ever stopped someone who was using a extension cord and commented on how they coiling them up. They might think your some sort of creep if you did that potentially.

I learned the over-under method from one of the video guys at school. It makes setup and teardown go much faster once you get the kick of it. All of the touring guys do it, seems to make everyone happy when working on a big show.
