how do you make a living ?

all this talk of tools and everything related has got me wondering what does everyone do for a living?
me... i am an auto tech for a large city in the southeastern usa
mostly work on g.m. cars and trucks and ford trucks up to 550 series
i truly enjoy what i do and feel a sense of accomplishment when job is finished and done right

I am a biomedical equipment technician. I work on ventilators, anesthesia machines and any thing that come in contact with patients that is mechanical or electronic in nature.

I am a retired merkin manufacturer. Had to give up the business when my eyes started to fail and I could no longer see well enough to properly fit them.

I'm a "semi-professional" auto-tech you might say? But these days Im I'm a Rutger's School of Engineering student.

I say "semi-professional" because nearly everything I own was paid for by fixing cars, but I only do it 40/week over summer break. While in school, its weekends and days off. I'm no master technician but I can pay the bills, I suppose that counts?

does being a mastertech at Chrysler mean you can change head gaskets on their entire line up faster then what the book says :D?

i would do little quick than what flat rate is but i am hourly and i am doing the first fixed visit so my rate is better than other... if too many comeback then i am doing bad... i has no problems after replaced the head gaskets and most of the vehicles did not come back for problems.. mostly of them come to have other service perform from me...

At the moment I am a senior in Mechanical engineering and pay the bills by lifeguarding/jack of all trades for my boss and Strengths lab TA during the semester. Along the way I have done construction, refrigeration, mining, weld inspecting and various other jobs that happened along.

With any luck about this time next year i'll be starting in as a field engineer in the oil field (unless mining or power gets a hell of a lot better off in the next few weeks.)

Independent shop owner,SAAB & Volvo specialist,custom high performance engines and applications, all makes. I work on the silver spoon cars, so I can make enough to work on what I like.LOL

Mechanic helper at a Dodge dealership. I'm essentially a glorified lube tech, but I do brakes, electrical, heavy line, HVAC, and light line stuff as well. The only things I don't do are transmissions, alignments, and driveability.

Chassis Maintainer for New York City Transit Authority. That is bus mechanic to anyone else but since our title is maintainer they don't have to pay us mechanics rate even though thats what we are.

It was a very damanding job that required a lot of skill to get them properly alligned along the sides, so the center still opened and closed properly. If you didn't get it right the first time, you had a very unhappy customer. Color matching was always a problem. I'm sure that I don't need to go into every detail of the job for you to understand, do I???

Heavy equipment mechanic for D.C. Metro Rail System. I work/repair on equipment used for repairing the track. Was a auto line tech in a dealership before that so this is very different and pretty cool. I work the night shift. I dont like it when something breaks down and I have to go fetch it though.

My background is mostly physics and computer science.

Wikipedia knows what a merkin is... Had to look it up, too. :D

If we are unhappy with a tool from the Danaher Group, do we complain to you? I know what it is like to do work for snobs.. Many of my merkin customers were snobs that thought that there p**** didn't stink. I knew better!! :lol_hitti

I've always wondered how you attach a merkin. Velcro, staples, rivets, bolts? Are special tools required to get good adhesion? I'd imagine the implications of a loose merkin would be catastrophic...

I manage construction crews that install industrial pallet rack systems and conveyor accross the country.
Needless to say, it's been very slow lately and going to get worse I fear...

although you don't NEED to.......i have all the time in the world to listen. i'm sure the manufacturing and installation end of the business is better than removal and disposal :lol_hitti
