Here's my toolbox.

What would you do to be most efficient. Right now the first drawer is my pliers drawer. Second is my pry bars, files, screwdrivers and cutting implements. Third is my DMM, scantool, torque wrenches, soldering iron. Fourth is just a **** drawer with RTV, brake clean, towels, etc. I'd be fine getting rid of this drawers contents if if would help organizing better. Second to last drawer is my set of ratcheting wrenches and last is my power tools and lisle spill free funnel.

I would put the most used items in the top drawer and then work down from there based on usage requirements.

Oh yes. I forgot to add that where the sliding top portion is houses my sockets and ratchets and my flashlight. Id like to swap the bottom drawer with the top portion but then my sockets will be at the floor.

Get rid of RTV, brake clean, towel drawer. You paid for a tool box not a consumables storage box. Everyones needs are different. Best thing I can tell you is get rid of plastic boxes that stuff comes in to save space.

Second drawer metric wrenches. Ratchet AND combo. It'd drive me nuts reaching for an often used tool that was basically laying on the ground.

Long top drawer in my box is 3/8" and 1/2" sockets, extensions, ratchets, breaker bars, torque wrenches, etc. Next layer is split in 2, SAE wrenches on left, Metric Wrenches on right. Next layer (again, split) is Screwdrivers on the left, pliers/adjustable wrenches on the right. Those are my most used tools.

What is optimum right now for your tool organization will change. Set it up for the tools that you have now and don't worry about it. As was previously stated: Put your most commonly used tools in the upper drawers.

I have read several threads on here about people moving the drawers around on their box. Take a look and see if its as easy as pulling one drawer out and sliding the others in. If you can't I'm sure that you can drill out the rivets on the slides and redrill the holes.

BTW: Do you like the top opening like that? I started to buy a box like that and decided that I would use the top for a workbench and never be able to open the top.

Yeah I actually like it a lot. It's convenient because I don't use it as a hard use work top it's more of storage. Things don't roll off the side due to the recessed center. I kind of like it because the slides are solid so the weight is easy to move if I have rotors on it or something.

i tended to keep my most used tools somewhere between shoulder level, and waist level in my main boxes.

less used smaller stuff up higher, less used bulky/heavy stuff down low.

but i had/have a few more boxes than you do.....

Do you use that as a cart or your primary box? I have the Mac version of that, minus the bottom couple drawers. I keep pens, paper, diagnostic and frequently used specialty stuff (picks, a hood prop, small torque wrenches, couple shorter cheater bars, etc) under the sliding leaves. In the top compartment are 1/4 through 1/2" chrome sockets, ratchets, extensions plus some of the most frequently used 3/4" sockets. In the slots to the right and left, I keep my screwdriver set, pry bars, extra long extensions, and an extra long ratchet. First drawer is wrenches 1/4" to 1" and 7 mm to 24 mm, in those wrench trays sears sells (great by the way), plus adjustables and my 1/2" torque wrench. The next drawer is all pliers, probably about 40 or 50 pairs laid out flat. The last drawer is all air tools, impacts, gloves, a test light and multimeter. And the open bottom is all chemicals and some spare parts. Works very well for me, and has minimized my trips across the shop to my main box.

It's a primary box. But at home. I can't have tools at work. Shops too small. Boss makes me use his tools.

Solid advice in here.. Most used stuff as close to arm height as possible. In this box that is top, in others like a traditional top box/middle/rolling that would be middle area. Also dropping some of the cases or boxes will help and getting a pliers rack will create a ton of space in that drawer. I'm setting a rolling bottom up to bring in to work and will be putting a sunnex driver/prybar holder on the side to free most of a drawer.

I really wish I had some deeper drawers (maybe 4") closer to the bottom of the box because right now I have to put my air tools in the very bottom. the bottom right drawer is just a junk, big wrench, catch everything I never touch, and dremel drawer...for now...
