So it was time to put the Christmas decorations back in the attic. I don't have a set of fold down steps, just a framed hole in the ceiling of the back bedroom. Rather than buy a set of pull down steps and install them, I rigged this up:

With the two pulleys it only requires half the effort to lift stuff. I know, I know the rafters are not rated for lifting, but I won't be lifting engines, just Christmas decorations and the such. The wife finds the whole process amusing. Just thought this might help you guys to put the decorations away this year. The whole setup didn't cost me much, considerably less than pull down steps. What do you all think?

I admire your craftiness, but honestly?......It looks like alot of work to me. You put a ladder into the attic, then have somebody move it away so you can lift stuff?

After my temp ladder slipped on my garage floor and I busted my shoulder, I put a Werner folding 300# aluminum ladder into my garage attic. Yes, it cost me $250 bucks, but it's so worth it to pull it down, do my business, and fold it up.

But...as long as it works for you, good for you.

My suggestion would be to burn all the Christmas stuff and never buy any more.

i agree it is easier to get into, and then back out of the attic with a fold down ladder. but i disagree that it's easier to walk up said steps w/ a rubbermaid container in my hands. i've had to wrestle boxes and the like up fold down steps in my parents house. it's a pain and w/ both hands full it's difficult to climb those steps safely.

i wish i could burn the Christmas stuff, but the wife likes it. darn the bad luck.

I have a pulldown ladder and a lot of the time it's in the way of what I'm moving into/out of the attic. I was thinking about cutting another hole to avoid this problem.
