I got some 4 rail riveted on a red plate setup I think made by VIM tools, the clips are so extremely stiff... is this going wear out my sockets? I am going to take the ones I use most (metrics) and put them in a hanson style..

Since were on this topic, I can't seem to find these online any where. They are magnetic and come in atleast 1/4" and 3/8". These were off the SO truck, but I am curious as to who is the supplier. They're nice because they stick to the drawer and hold the sockets at the same time...better then my bar magnets and clip rails for my "other" sockets.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I think the OEM is "MAG CLIP" You can buy them from Northern tool branded "Triton" or from Sears as Craftsman.

The above links aren't what Strizzy has; his are gradated for socket size whereas the magclips are all equally spaced. Though they serve the same purpose, whatever Strizzy has would hold more sockets in a given space. The possible color coding might also be handy.

If you have the metal rail style socket holders and the clips make it too hard to get off to your liking (especially when your hands are greasy), just take a pair of pliers and "adjust" them with pliers. Just take the pliers and bend the clips a little and test with a socket to see if it to your liking; repeat until all the clips are adjusted! I have the craftsman ones and when they are new, many are almost too stiff to use, until I "adjust" them. I try to find a nice "medium" so I can get them off but not too easy where they will fall off! Good luck! :)

Ah yes, you are right. "Mag-n-it" perhaps?

I have the bottom 1/2 of the craftsman tool kit holding all of my sockets for now.

I'll have one of these on Monday.

http://image.snapon.com/international/pdf/bptrylas.pdf

One of the guys I work with already has one and it's nice. Holds 1/4", 3/8", & 1/2" sockets and has brackets for holding ratchets. I'll post pics when I get it.

I have a pair of MAC holders like that. Not as fancy, but works real well.

Kinda like this http://cgi.ebay.com/120pc-SOCKET-TR...ryZ11706QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I bought a bunch of those HF trays right before I discovered the Hansen trays (on this site). Now the HF trays are collecting dust.
I like my Hansen trays. No pics though.

Being that they look pretty thin, are they flexible Strizzy?

Not really, I mean you can bend them if you picked them up and tried, but nothing to worry about from just using them. One of the guys at the shop has some cut into smaller lengths to group specialty sockets for certain jobs.

Here's my very limited set. I just started out. What you see is Craftsman 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". The 3/8 and the 1/4s are on Hansen Socket Trays, the 1/2s are on Craftsman socket rails (never use 1/2" anyways).

Warning- VERY bad cell phone pic!

You can also catch a glimpse of my new FLHF80!

The problem with the pre-organized systems is that they probably don't usually fit what you've got. For example, I have the Sears plastic "plates" with holes and sizes marked. But it didn't include some 32nd sockets. I have a 4.5 mm socket. Where do I put it, along with my 22 mm socket on the above set-up? Are there duplicate holes to accommodate spark plug sockets?

Being persnickety, I also don't like empty holes, so these pre-marked holes would make me go buy their version of organization.

The various styles that allow you to add/move socket holders seem more flexible, but they pretty much need two hands to remove a socket, so I don't like those, either. I guess I'd like to see something where you can add your own magnets or dowel pins to something that you could organize how you wish.

dps,
I agree with you about the fixed amount of sockets my example has. I have a similar problem with those socket organizers shown below. I have a set of 3/8 and 1/2 sockets and not all of them will fit on one strip. What happens if only 14 sockets fit on one strip and you have 18 sockets in your set? Four get left behind in the tool box (or add another strip for that few of sockets), and naturally one of them is needed once you start working on something.

Maybe come up with some kind of metal tray that you can add foam to and cut your own holes? Add some labels and you have your own removable socket organizer. Foam holds the sockets in place but don't require two hands to remove like the strips. Only problem would be keeping labels stuck to foam :(

Yeah, I'm searching and contemplating the subject, too. I like the foam idea except that it's a LOT of holes, and they're all different sizes. And you could either buy the size stickers, or use a label maker to come up with something, though neither of them would probably stick to open cell foam very well. A closed cell foam gets pretty pricey, though many of the rest of these alternatives start to add up themselves.

I at least don't have the mobile problem since I wouldn't take entire strips to the vehicle, but tend to grab what I know I'll need and put them on a magnet strip on a job cart and use the excuse of missing a size I need to straighten out my kinks and walk back over to the box.

I drop all of my sockets and wrenches in the parts washer to clean them up before going back in the box.
ratchets take a shot of brake or carb cleaner and a good wipe down

I apologize in advance for picture quality, I really meant to take some with my real camera (not my cell phone).

This is a Craftsman organizer system (actually two kits). I looked at a lot of different setups and found this one to be my favorite.

3/8" & 1/4" - Standard

I have been thinking about putting a little piece of duct tape over the holes that I have no sockets for. Any other ideas?

I tried. I already filled in every hole I could with Craftsman.

The rest of the holes in the Craftsman organizer, Craftsman doesn't make sockets for. :wtf:

Adam

If you have a Menards in your area you can buy the Allen brand (same stuff as Craftsman, different name) and fill in the holes. They have a much more complete line.

There is no Menards here. I heard Anderson (maybe?) was the same. I checked them out and they did have a more complete line but were pretty spendy. They looked similar but only seeing them online I wasn't sure if they were the same.

I'll look into Allen as well.

Can anyone confirm someone who basically has identical sockets that would go with the Craftsman set? (Same dimensions and design.)

Thanks,

Adam

S&K is now making some Craftsman sockets. Check out the Craftsman time frame thread, last few pages. I would ASSUME that they would look close enough.

Crappy pic I know, but here are some of my sockets. Most are on clip rails.

Hansen trays won't cut it here....

wow it is nice sockets... you are use it for right jobs which it will last long... are you do some of side job or nothing? i am wondering...

I don't work in an automotive shop anymore, and I try not to do side jobs because I value my free time. I still do minor brake and suspension work once in awhile for family members.

I do all of the work on my own vehicles, of course.

I now work in computer support, and don't do any side jobs in that field either, because I got tired of people calling me 24/7 demanding I fix their computer.

I could definitely use the extra money, but in the long run, I have found it is just not worth the hassle.

But they keep feed me like go out for dinner...

i am understand if i do a lot of side job and if peoples make more hassle then it is bad thing to do... lost the friendship or else which would make bad for myself...

In my experience, people don't take responsibility for keeping their anti-virus software updated, don't bother to run MS updates, etc.

I got tired of cleaning up machines for people, updating everything, and then they let them go for 6-12 months without taking care of them.

They would call me and insist it was my fault they again had 10,000 viruses because I was the last one that worked on it.
