I store them like books on my lower shelf in my tool crib. They’re unique enough that I know what’s contained but for others, a fat sharpie could be used to identify them.

I just stack them in an unused area.

Lateral File cabinets. They’re about the most affordable bulk storage you can get. The lateral cabinets are just like a tool chest with really deep drawers. Go pick a case of paper, you’ll understand. Those cabinets hold a case in each drawer. Cheep too.

I have few tools in blow molded cases as they take up way too much space. The several that I do still have in cases I have standing on end in my 72" tall cabinets, usually the bottom and second shelf up from the bottom are reserved for blow molded cases.

most of my plastic cases are thrown out. too damn big, not enough room inside, the damn cord has to be arranged perfectly for the case to close.
the steel cases that power tools used to come in, those were a great idea. whenever i come across one, i acquire it

This was a wooden cubby they were throwing away at work. 4x8, 3/4 plywood sits next to my roll away toolbox and keeps those boxes nicely managed.

They all get put on shelves based on the use of the tool within. Things like my Fluke meter, etc.that I use a lot go in the shelf on the toolbox; those which are less used (like my older direct drive radial saw) or homeowner tools go on a shelf in the garage. The more I use something the closer at hand I want it.

I toss most cases for tools unless it is a kit with a lot of little bits. Stuff I do keep in the cases are on the shelf.

Man, a lot of great suggestions. I have limited space so I definitely have that variable to consider and I may have to throw some of em out. The pictures help a lot.

I just keep the original tools in their respective cases and stack them on a shelf mounted high on the wall. I can't tell you the number of times I've turned down a Craigslist deal simply because throwing out the cases lead to the seller losing track of the accessory parts. Just like loose sockets sets, there's always something missing.

I have some wooden shelves to store many of them. I won't get rid of them because it is the best way to transport them if they need be moved to a job site plus it keeps the accessories together. Their sizes are totally random which makes it difficult to store efficiently. For instance i got some nail guns that are one size then a worm drive Skilsaw with its large case and a portable band saw. Many of these are used infrequently so a case is nice in that it keeps everything together and no sawdust or dirt in there.

These all just stack up on shelves somewhat like books. But I like cases for my stuff. My Bosch jigsaw came with a nice one but frequently if the tool didn't come with one I will be a ammunition case from HF on sale and repurpose those.

Most of them get tossed. The ones that I do keep the cases for are stored in my storage cabinets, a 48x18 and a 36x24. They have doors so all this is out of sight.

I take my tools on the road often, so having the cases helps protect them and keep them organized in the Knaack or in the back of my truck.

If I never left the shop, I would possibly consider tossing the cases, but even then the cases are a nice organizational thing. Keeps the cords all contained, as well as keeps the bits, blades, adapters, whatever with the tool.

My old man kept all his power tools in a big cabinet with all the cords wrapped around the tool. It worked ok, and was a dense way to store the tools, but it was an organizational nightmare. Everything was piled on top of each other, and the parts were never with the tool.

I have more than enough cupboard space that I can use the GF’s label maker and stuff them up high. If they are in blow molded cases....more than not, it’s not a highly used tool unlike my grinders.

I keep all of my power tools in their cases. Helps keep them from collecting extra dust and keeps them safe in case they were to knocked off the shelf. It's also nice to keep extra blades or bits in the case with the tool. Make traveling with them nice too as they are protected and stack well.

The down side is the cases do take up extra room.

I keep mine in a rack.

+1 for lateral file cabinets. Can be picked up cheaply (or even free if you are patient) and painted/wrapped to look like the rest of your garage storage.
