i was tempted to be a smart a$$ and say " In a file cabinet, of course." but I'd actually like to know the answer as well. What few files I have are loose in a drawer in my tool chest.

Don't have a picture here but at work I cut a piece of 3/4 plywood to fit a drawer then sawed kerfs about 1/4" deep about 1.25" apart. Then I glued masonite dividers into the saw kerfs. Each slot fits 2 files 69 style.

I will let you in a little secret I buy a 24" metal magnet bar and hang up my files,I must have so many that I lost count! Metal should never touch othet metal, but each file close to the tang does not have any teeth to get damaged that is the place I hang them on the magnet.

If you go to a store or on line you can buy them I think 12" long,24" long or even longer in length. If money is an issue you can build a small wood cabinet or build a butcher block type holder for all of your files.

All piled on top of each other. I usually store them with the blades touching so the handles fit better and allow the drawer to close. Most of the time I have to shake everything around before it will close.

I need a bigger toolbox!!

P.S. yes I know this is possibly the worst way to store files.

The heck with my system I like Afazz's system much better, just think of all the money that I could have saved , I wonder if any of files will get prematurely dull?

I got some cd storage mats from Ikea for a couple of bucks. They're rubbery plastic, about 1/2" thick, and can be easily cut to any length. I use a razor blade to easily double or triple the slots for wider files. If the files have handles, the handles just hang off the edge of the mat. The mat simply separates the business side of the files.
