If you are asking about portable power tools, vs. table saws and such, mine are mostly on shelves in a two-door metal cabinet. Cordless tools are kept in their original blow-mold cases on a shelf next to the cabinet.

Small power tools with cases in their cases.

Small power tools w/o Cases in tool box drawers mostly.

Bench mount tools get mounted on 1 X 12 X 24 sections of ply, and "shelf mounted" on adjustable shelf standards, and have an inverted "T" mounted on the underside of the mounting hoard for a B&D Work Mate to clamp on in use.

I keep most of my cordless stuff in the tall drawer in my toolbox and the rest that are too big to fit are on shelves. A lot of people I know hang them on pegboards too.

Most corded are in the cases they came in, then stored in 2 stainless steel 6' high cabinets. Others in plastic tool box's. I need to install good locks on them and chain them to the 2x6 stud wall and or concrete floor.

All of my power tools are stored in their original cases, or in a Craftsman-like bag if it did not come with a case.

I have a question regarding storage of Lithium-Ion tools (specifically, the batteries). When I switched from NiCd to LiOn, I started storing all of my cordless tools and extra batteries inside the house, in a closet. As opposed to the garage, which gets cold and here in NC, very hot in the summer. Is such a practice justified with LiOn batteries or am I just driving my wife crazy :lol_hitti

All the corded tools stay in the garage in their cases, on baker's racks. And they are all full of course :pimpflash

Knaack box- they are ugly, heavy, and relatively cheap. Hopefully, the thieves wil see it and go to someone elses house with a big shiny 3-bay SnapOn box!

Bench top tools on a shelf which is just about exactly the height of the bench, for ease of transfer.

Hand power tools on the other shelves (this has been reconfigured to allow more small tool storage).

I would prefer that this was an enclosed cabinet...the tools get caked with sawdust and swarf in my studio.

I found a Hon 2 drawer cabinet laying next to a dumpster. Brought it home and it works great! Woodworking tools in bottom drawer, metalworking tools in top drawer.

I've been out here for 3 months but this is my first post. I hope the Crackberry pics download w/o issue. I too leave the tools in their original cases or toss all like tools in a tool bag (i.e. mouse, orbital, 1/4 sheet and 1/2 sheet sanders). I try and add tools, attachments and accessories into these cases as well. Now for my contribution:

My favorite or mostly used tools get a dedicated bag and I add additional things in with them to become a grab and go bag. they are on a shelf in front of the plastic cases right at face/chest height:bag storage.jpg

The next two pics shows the Worm drive inside and out of his bag.

Then the Sawzall gets a bag.

There's a hammer drill bag that houses all my hole saws, fostner bits, concrete bits, tapcon set as well as a set of drill bits and blade bits.

Lastly and most used is my Makita bit driver. The accessories have grown to do anything I need to do with a cordless. I'll post a couple pictures to describe.

And just so it's not about bags, I have a hard-sided tackle box that I bought to house my Dremels:

Most of mine are in their blow mold cases. The loose ones are currently stored in a metal "microwave" cabinet I threw together from scrap at work during lunch.

I want a lateral file cabinet like evintho has. I have been watching CL for one (or a few)

I like my power tools in their box that the tool came in. I've even bought a case or two for those tools that did not come with one. Not only does it make storing the tool easier and more efficient. It also makes them easier to transport and pack since they have flat surfaces that stack well. The case also add protection to the tool when its in the case.

Here's how mine are stored.

Evintho, nice score on the file cabinet setup! Add a couple plywood brackets and I bet you could fit more in pretty easily.

Just read in the shop security thread about a GJer who had all of his cased tool stolen. Makes me want a locking cabinet like this to make my stuff less obvious/portable.

I'm surprised that so many people keep the cases. I have a very small garage and simply can't afford the space, so the case is the first thing that gets tossed. Most of them are way larger than necessary.

I've kept everything in the plastic cases they've come in for the most part and try to buy tools that come in a case whenever possible as long as its the right tool for the job. It makes keeping the accessories with the tool so much easier (and keeps me from going on a treasure hunt every time I go to use that tool).

My first Bosch 12V kit came in a small nylon bag. That kit has been transitioned to a Bosch L-Boxx along with other tools I've added to the 12V collection. Same goes for the drywall screwdriver and Rotozip that didn't come with cases - they share space in a single box along with extra driver bits and cutting bits. All of my Makita 18V and Bosch 12V Li-Ion batteries and chargers are in a single box to make it easy to keep them all in the house away from freezing temps in the garage. I like the L-Boxxes because I can latch a couple of them together to carry at one time. Also convenient if I'm doing work away from my house. I'm planning to migrate a couple of other tools to them just to standardize on a shape of container to make storage easier. My current stack of 9 sits on a small dolly I made out of a piece of extra plywood, some scrap 1x poplar for a lip around the perimeter, and 4 locking swivel casters from Woodcraft. The lip is recessed to hold a metal tab that the L-Boxxes will lock into but with a move last fall I didn't get around to that part of the project yet.

My Milwaukee corded drill didn't come with a case so I bought a metal Milwaukee case that has a lift out tray. The tray holds the random Bosch and Lenox holesaws that won't fit with my Milwaukee holesaw kit and a small set of drill bits. Another case like this is for my heat gun.
