How do you typically hang stuff on your ceiling?

Do you typically screw all of your hooks/eyehooks into the joists? Or just hang stuff from the ceiling its self?

I'm wanting to mount some lights, and a neutered Browning 1919 from the ceiling, but I'm not sure if I'm being overly **** about only wanting to mount this stuff into joists.

It depends on the type of light; old work cans, small surface mount lights are fine hanging from sheet rock, but a fixture that weighs more than a few pounds I would want into a joist.

I definitely wouldn't hang a 1919 from sheet rock! You'll want to catch a couple joists for that...

Only stuff i have hanging from my ceiling is a 4 x 8 wire rack and all my fishing poles with hooks above the boat. All are mounted to the joists. Nice to have stuff out of the way. Works pretty good though.

I have uni-strut everywhere. Shelves.....airline, conduit......photographs, all mount to strut channel. Strut channel bolted to studs and rafters. Garage fully finished.

M1919 Browning LMG is 31 lbs without accessories. I would certainly hang it from a joist or a 2"x4" block between joists.

Over the past few years I have been putting up a lot of ceiling blocking to carry the weight of fans. I use 3.5" deck screws through the joust and into the end of the blocking. Easier than driving nails, stronger, and minimizes collateral damage to drywall.

Everyone has already said it best, go with screw type fasteners for everything but the light stuff, you won't be sorry.

I have 11.5 ft ceilings, so "hanging" stuff can be a project in and of itself. I found that these:

once installed in strategic locations, can give a lot of options.

Threaded rod and 2x4s can bring the hooks where you need them, and you can simply swap out rod, closed or open ended eyes as you need them.
