How do you use your tool cart?

Curious, how do you use your tool cart?

1. As your main tool box
2. Most common things in the cart, go to the box for others (or a second set of tools in the cart)
3. Just a few basics, grab what you need from the box for most jobs
4. Only as a mobile workstation - all tools are kept in the main box.

Main tool box - the big ones are for storage of infrequently used tools or larger tools. Most of what you need at hand is best placed in the cart on a permanent basis - no time to select my weapons before I go into battle - they are already selected. Might have to grab a specialty tool and throw it on top but such is life.

The HF cart I have at home is where the "use it all the time" stuff lives. At work my cart is a little different than most:

I put my overgrown rally box with all of the normal use tools on it, the alignment box and whatever else I may need to haul around the plant on it. I've got a padeye welded onto it and chain it to my gangbox when I'm not using it.

my "main tool box" is actually my center of the world for me (computer, 24" monitor, amp, speakers, use it as a bar, etc... every time we got visitors over, we guys gather in the garage around the "big boy" and have our drinks and watch a movie / youtube...etc..)....and of course all the tools are stored in there too....

The smaller roll around is for my bike restorations, and the 44" HF box is my wife's storage box (gardening stuff, and her tools... etc..)

My main "cart" is a rollaround hydraulic lift table. It is about 30"x 16". The way the shop is laid out, I'm never that far from my box, but a mile from a bench. I can adjust the cart to *** buggy height. I also have a three drawer Kennedy bottom that I roll around, but that is filled with overflow tools, not everyday hand tools. I have had several style of carts, but this is lift cart is by far the best for me.

I have to be mobile all around the area i work at. So having the cart and a second set is working out very well for me when i'm working

Actually, none of the above. I use it for diagnostic equipment (scope, OBDII computer, gauges, test kits, multimeters, noid lights, etc.) The cart is made by Shark, I got it for a song and absolutely love it. With all my diagnostic equipment in one place, it makes it easy to move around the car while I'm running whatever tests need to be run. I keep all my hand-held torches on it too.

I don't have a tool cart. My rolling tool box serves the purpose of storing my tools and rolling to whatever part of the garage I'm working, so I have no use for another cart.

Its a Second set of tools, and all my Oil Changing tools.
Rool it out in the driveway to work on other cars (kids, Neighbors, etc)

when i used a cart all the time, i was working in a rebuild room at a const eq dealership, it held my "daily use" tools.

specialty bearing, seal drivers, torque wrenches, 3/4" dr stuff, ect stayed in my main boxes.

i could take care of 99% of my daily work off the cart.
my main boxes stayed pretty much in the same place for 8 years, when i worked in the main shop, my boxes never really had to be moved, my 2 working bays were next to each other.

i keep a cheap torin workstand at the shop now to pile tools on if i have to work in the shop, i usually have my truck inside too.

Is it wrong if my tool cart is one of the heavy duty Craftsman ones and I mainly use it for transporting heavy vise parts between the car and the garage?

Yeah, oversight on my part. Funny I'd make that oversight, because that category fits me right now. I'm thinking of getting one though and haven't settled on exactly what kind... I have seen a well-used Hazet Assistent for sale locally. Tempting, but wondering if I should go bigger (i.e., the "old style" chrome frame / red trays & drawers service cart)

my only cart right now is just a set down surface, its a cheap matco, bluepoint, etc one they all have. i put a piece of diamond plate on top years ago to make it strong now I can put t-cases etc on it when I am working. i am in the market for one of the big nice carts like jsc750, snap on krsc46, etc but need the right price

i dont have one yet but want one for my 3/8 sockets, hex and torx, extensions, ratchets. impact in 1/2 and 3/8, gear wrenches and brake tools. im not in a shop yet but at home every thing i work on i need that stuff (exept the brake tools) go from the box to car then put back and organized takes few trips. i know once i get a job in a shop il be useing the brake tools alot more. maybe toss in a pry bar and a ball peen

I got tired of dragging my tool bag all over the plant and running back to the shop for additional items to complete an otherwise easy job. I still have a box back in the shop but it is slowly emptying into my roller/cart.

I mostly just keep most used things in mine. Metric wenches, pliers, pry bars, metric set of sockets and a big hammer. Everything else stays in my big krl

I've got the Harbor Freight 44" box and the Harbor Freight 5 drawer cart. I use both of these in a home environment. With that being said, I use my 5 drawer cart as more of my "main box," it has all the stuff I need in it to work on anything anywhere in the garage or in the driveway. It's got a complete set-up in there; wrenches, sockets, ratchets, etc. etc.

My 44" box stays put and acts as more of a storage solution/backup to my 5 drawer cart. I use it to hold a full duplicate tool set and various & sundry items.
