I have a Chevy avalanche with a mild lift, which makes it hard to work on hard to wax ect.

I am always working off a ladder dragging it around kind of stinks, I am thinking of building some kind of ladder on wheels, or i thought of some sort of board with 2 ladders kind of like a scaffold

Just wanting to see if anyone else has done anything like this

I don't bother to wax my lifted Jeep...wouldn't cover the dents and scratches gotten using the lift......:willy_nil:lol_hitti

I actually love working under the Jeep on the other hand, easy to get at stuff! Topside creepers look nice, but are $$. Could use one for my plow truck's engine bay.

ya no need to lift it up to work under it at all

I wax mine on it is more of a show peace than my 66 Chevy 4x4 which needs no wax because it has no paint lol but it gets beat up offroad all the time

My lifted Tacoma really only sees a pressure washer and mop brush at a DIY wash bay. It's a daily driver/offroad trail truck, so there isn't any real bling to detail. Being lifted is great, makes wrenching and welding easier, more head room when you crawl underneath. I either stand on the back tire (in park with emergency brake on) to strap stuff to the roof rack. Otherwise I have a milk crate to stand on, also doubles as a item carrier and propane tank cradle.

Get some drywaller stilts and get good on them. You could also make money trimming the neighbors tall hedges for payback on the tool investment.

I use one of these, Got it at Home Depot
Although usually I have to clean it off first, too easy to set stuff on when it sits alongside the wall.

I use a small ladder...but that step looks like it would work much better.

X2.

All the pinstriping from tree branches and trail rash/ dents don't really bother me at all. Each scratch and dent has a story. The running joke in our club is, every time someone acquires a new dent or gouge, someone usually says "ah, that'll buff out!" :badteeth:

I just went back to a "taller" vehicle (a not too tall 2015 GMC Canyon), and I was thinking about easiest way to wax the top of it, when the time comes.... One of my lifts, a late 50's autolifter, is like a giant set of ramps that comes apart easily. When the time comes, I will just put one ramp on either side of the vehicle, to easily access the roof... Good luck finding one of these though... Years ago, I would just use some heavy duty benches that I had, but weren't very stable...

I assume it's lifted for a reason and not just for looks - here's how you're supposed to work on it:

I use the same stool for my lifted Ford Excursion. Just fold it up and stand it on its end when you're not using it and you won't be tempted to use it as a storage shelf! :D

Something like this? Probably wont help you trying to wax the truck tho.

I usually just stand on the top of my tire on my Tahoe.

I use a topside creeper for doing under hood work.

^^This. My wife got me one for Christmas about ten years ago. At first I thought it was kind of cheezy but I use the hell out of it. I have had to replace the casters with some better ones about five years or so ago but other than that it has worked great. With the casters locked I don't have to worry about it rolling out from under me or moving around and it is actually quite sturdy.

I hate working on boats but it works well on those too.

Mike.

Just read this recently and haven't tried it yet, but the idea is to cut a scrap 2x10 or 2x12 and put it across the fenders on some padding. Two of them might be even nicer. This would make for a platform to lie on. My guess is you'd want to cut it to fit on the lips inside the hood recess rather than on the tops of the fenders. Next time I need to work under the truck hood, I'm going to cut some pieces out of some of my big 2x's and give this one a go. Don't know how much it will deflect yet; that would be my only concern. Anyone do this?

Haha, I use the same one too. I have a couple of Broncos & it works great. Even has the steps on the ends.

For working underneath I have some tall axle stands, but they don't get used unless the wheels need to be off the ground. Plenty of room under there.

The aluminum step did some odd duty awhile back. My wife had surgery on her achilles & had to keep it dry for a couple of weeks. Even getting to the bathroom was a challenge at first. And 2 weeks with no shower was not an option. I put 2 legs of the bench in the tub & the other 2 on a 4x12 block on the floor so it was downhill into the tub. I put a towel on it so she didn't have to sit directly on the aluminum. She could sit on it then slide into the shower. I also pulled the tub spout off & put a hand held in its place. Hung a plastic tarp instead of the glass slider. The foot stayed out on the bench & dry. It worked surprisingly well.

Bought the Werner version of this a couple of months after buying an '05 Colorado Z71 4x4. Worked great for washing and waxing the roof of it and my now wife's '04 Escape. Always being used in the house or garage for other projects too. Best $19 (well before a couple of price increases) I think I've even spent.
