How Does a Yankee Drill Selector Switch Work?

I got a Stanley No. 130A Yankee Drill and took it apart to clean and lubricate. When I slid off the cover everything fell out.



Now I can't figure out how to reassemble it. The selector button doesn't seem to have any way of staying in place. It fits into a rectangular hole in the spring but doesn't stay there:




The top metal strip has slots in it so it doesn't hold it in place, either.



When I slide the cover back over the mechanism and then operate the button, it just falls out. What am I missing?

There are two "L" shaped pieces of metal underneath the sliding switch that engage the notches on the bushing. When one side is held down to engage the bushing, the other end is pushed down so the plate misses the notches.

I watched it. The camera is out of focus at the critical moment when he shows the spring mechanism!

Do you remember how (or if) the button was attached to the spring?

Just a thought, wont the cover hold it in place once it is slid back in position?

You would think, but there are slots in the cover that hold the button in place when the direction of shaft rotation is selected. It passes right through them, though.
