how does this clamp work?

It looks like a slit piece of pipe that is welded to the clamp's foot and slides up and down with the screw, in order to protect the threads from things like welding spatter. Pretty cool. I like the gusseting built into the casting. (edit- "forging", not casting)

Looks like a casting at the parting line.

Havens Steel Company - Protected thread guarded clamps.

I just googled the name cast into the clamp. Initially I thought it was Avens but its Havens. Several examples out there on the net.

Very cool. I had never seen these before either.

The orange shield is a weld splatter shield to keep bb's off the threads. Other than that it works like a standard C clamp.
