How far from wall should ceiling HVAC registers be?

Mounting the HVAC registers in the ceiling of my basement. One will be ending above a window. How far out should I mount it? Thanks in advance

They can be up against the wall as long as they're two way or three way throw.

Not a code thing just performance.

Depends on your grilles and ceiling construction.
Round ones need more room than rectangular ones. Mount for ease of installation.
Round could use a 6" elbow where rectangular needs a boot.

Leave them at least 6" out so you have an option to put up crown molding. Otherwose, there are no rules / codes
