Hello all I think this might be my first post.I am making a winch mount for my car trailer. The winch i bought came with a roller flair head and I was wondering if there is a right distance from the winch it should be?
The closer the better. I think the one on my truck is about 1.5-2" away from the body of the winch. It is a generic mount, you could probably get closer with something custom.
Just make sure it is far enough if the cable side loads, pretty common.
The fairlead bolts to the front of the winch cause in a truck mount where else ya gonna put it. For a trailer mount it can go anywhere in front of the drum.
Most winches come with the fairlead on the front of the winch. That's fine and should be kept.
There's nothing preventing you from adding a second one farther down the line as a guide if you need it on the trailer. Be aware of side loads and brace accordingly.
