This is my neighbor's tank, they are older, so I watch over them, especially during bad weather like the cold weather we're having right now. I checked their tank gauge, but I can't find the indicator.

What do you think it reads?

A bit of info above If the screw comes out easily then remove it or rotate it and see if the pointer appears. Call the fill company and ask them for advise.

First picture sorta looks like 20%.

The colder it gets (especially below zero), the more you need in the tank. Not just for the obvious fuel reserve, but you need wetted surface area for the propane to absorb heat from the air.

IMG_1665.jpegAnother trick you can do if its cold out is to pour a mug of hot water over the tank. You will plainly see the level line on the side of the tank. However if its that low it will be buried in snow. We do that if the gauge unit inside the tank is stuck. The gauge you see above is just a magnet that follows the part in the tank with a brass sealing plate in between so there is no hole like the tanks back in the early 50's and before had that commonly leaked.

Here is gauge that was in my pocket. You can see what the pointer looks like.

It’s a 120 gallon tank gauge so the printed face is slightly different than a 250 gallon plus gauge.

What does "remote ready" mean? Is someone supposed to be monitoring this tank remotely?
You can put a monitor on that gauge, that talks to the cell network and keeps your company informed of the level at all times. Neevo is the most common brand but westroc makes them as do others I am sure. They even connect to an app on your smartphone so you can check the level without going out side

This is the old style monitor, they updated the casing this year.

Have you pulled the rubber plug? Needle might be underneath. I go into my local lp company office pay cash or local check and get a discount. Minimum is 150 gallons delivered.

A 550 gal tank wouldn't be bolted down? Assuming it isn't buried
I only know of one tank out of thousands that is actually strapped down. All of them around here are just setting on concrete lintels.

Some places in hurricane territories have code to either bury or strap down tanks. Lake pontchartrain had 100's of full tanks bobbing right at the surface right after katrina. They require straps/earth anchors even on burried tanks to keep them in place so they don't float out of the ground when its wet.

Also I highly doubt it a 550 gallon tank. They made some weird sizes in the 50's and before, I have some 650's from that era. But never seen a 550, probably a 500. The sizes were standardized in the 60's as was the gauge/valve layout for the most part. The style of gauge is post mid 60's

500 gallon, the 550 was a typo I missed.

They said they were going to call the local gas company. I don't know if they have or not; we talked about 3 PM this afternoon when it was about 35 degrees; it's now 30 American degrees, slated to go down to 20 tonight.

I'll check with them tomorrow and ensure they have gas on the way.

Thanks,

The red bar isn't an indicator. There should be a pointer
And I remember seeing the black pointer the last time I checked the tank for them a couple months ago. The thing is, I don't remember the "Remote Ready" black thingie on it.

Its empty. If you slide the black tab off for the monitor you will see the pointer underneath it.

We even give a $0.20 cent discount if you let us put a monitor on it and keep it full.
I went and looked at it again yesterday around noon, this time I brought my reading glasses.

You were exactly right. If you look from the "below 50%" side, you can just see the pointer. it was a hair under 5%.

They were supposed to get gas yesterday afternoon; I'll go over later today and take another pic. I also recommended that they ask the gas company to check for a leak. They usually fill up once a year in the Fall. Being empty so soon spells trouble.

Thanks for the help!

Sub 5%. Look close and you can see a shadow above the 5. Either way get it filled asap so it doesn’t run empty.

Have them call in and ask to be put on keep full or ask for the remote monitor to be installed. I have them on all 8 of my various tanks. They’re great.

That looks like it. Try to look at an angle under the black tab.

Once they get blow 20 don't they need a leak test performed? Thats what I was told by our gas company.

My tank went empty one year (I was on auto fill) on a Sunday morning. Propane co said they needed to send a service tech to perform a vacuum/leak test (going by memory, may have been called something different) to cert he tank. I said have at it, but I'm not the one that let it go empty so I'm not paying.

Tech transfered a few 100lb tanks into mine for the day and they filled it the next. In the end I never even got billed for the 200lbs...

It’s below 5% for us on all tanks except the 1,000gal tank by the grain dryer. They’re supposed to fill that one every 16hrs when we’re drying or bring us another and sometimes it goes empty. Below 10% the dryer doesn’t like it anyway so it isn’t often but it happens when it’s sunny and warm sometimes.

A leak check isn’t a bad idea but this year is breaking 50 year records for heating degree days so far. December was the coldest on record here since 1978. Last year was a 10 year record cold.

Do they have a central air source heat pump? The majority of them sold until the last 5 years go to an alternate heat source below 35 degrees. If that is a dual fuel propane setup then they very well could be put. There are a lot of HP customers that only summer fill getting one in the winter this year.

They got 100 gallons; black pointer is right at 25% (sorry no pics). I suspect - but did not ask nor was it discussed - $$ problems.

I will continue to monitor, but you can't lead a horse to water. High of 19 American degrees, Low of 15 American degrees through the rest of the weekend. :(

They are ripping you off probably.

There is no percentage according to code, its anytime there is an interruption of service. For example, turning you service valve off requires a leak check if the pressure drops in the piping.

If the gauge is pegged at 5 when we show up we open the spitter and see if there is good pressure. If there is strong pressure from the spitter we fill it.

One thing we do not tolerate is people running out and hooking up another tank such as a grill bottle or 100lbs cylinder. That is immediate tank pickup if its ours. If its a customer owned tank we request that they call someone else in the future.

NFPA 54 8.2.3* Leak Check. Immediately after the gas is turned on into a new system or into a system that has been initially restored after an interruption of service, the piping system shall be checked for leakage. Where leakage is indicated, the gas supply shall be shut off until the necessary repairs have been made.

Since its been unusually cold, I wonder if the propane company did secure adequate supply, and is thus putting customers on allocation.

I haven’t read about shortages this year, but it has happened in the past .

Both my house and shop have been getting topped off every thirty days through the supplier’s auto fill program. I suspect I’ll exhaust my pre-pay contract in another month, then it’s market price.

A 500 gallon tank will last me about three years; because of that it's not worth the gas companies time to put me on the auto fill route. I can't order it unless I am at or below 20%. (I can but there is an additional fee of I don't know how much. I just keep an eye on it and if it's at 22% in October I know the gas guy is going to get cold in December when it's finally time for a fill. They got lucky this time around, I was at 18% in July.

Propane furnaces do not like running out of gas, great way to soot up the heat exchanger... hopefully it has a low pressure cutoff.

It is unusually cold for this area, both temps and how long it's lasted. But I wasn't there, so don't have any clue if they discussed rationing gas due to the cold.

Gas tech came out yesterday. Put the leak detector on it for 10 minutes, no pressure loss = no gas leak. That's the good news. The bad news is that they've used up ~13% of the tank capacity in just less than 2 weeks. So they must have been really hitting the heat button while it's been cold around here. :(

The other good news is that it's finally warming up - about 70 American degrees yesterday and for today. :giggle:

I was really close last year. Had that happened I would have told the company to go F themselves after. (Took over a Month to get filled from the call date) and that was with caling daily at the end with less than 5% in the tank. I originally called with 20%+ in the tank.

OK, its a code violation and insurance companies will drop us. We deliver within a week max or that day if you want to pay the fees.

I would of told your company to take a leap anyways? Their piss poor performance is a separate issue and I have really only seen it here with amerigas and ferrell.

20 percent plus is where you are supposed to call. The ones that hook up grill bottles and 100 lbs cylinders call after running out that I am referencing.

Amrigas is the epitome of **** service and high gas prices. I was so glad to get rid of them when I bought a used 500 gallon tank. Even their own drivers hated their new "service" call telephone happy horse poop system.

They have consistently been $1.00+ cheaper per gallon, otherwise I'd never use them.
