I'm the new guy at our shop, but have been wrenching on small engines, tractors, bobcat my and anything else with an engine. I feel like I have a pretty good variety of tools in my box. So the whole tool truck thing is newish to me.

Our snap on guy rarely comes around but today he did so I decided to step onto the truck and take a peek at what he had. I had an interest in maybe purchasing a new 3/8 flex head but money is a little tight right now.

My boss introduced me to the snap on guy and exchange names and what not. Then he says," Did you come on here to just gawk at the tools or did you want to buy somethings." I told him I had an interest but waiting to see what else is out there.

Also today the Mac and Matco guy came by both nice reps told them Im thinking about bringing my stuff from home and add to it or buy a cart and fill that up. Both were happy to talk to me about it and give me there opinion offer different options out there.

I believe the Snap on brand sells itself, even if the rep is an *******, its a very recognized brand but no way will he ever get a dollar out of my wallet.
just want to know what your snappy guy is like?

Tools aside, the two Snap-On truck owners I have tried to deal with have both sucked. One by work wont return calls, one by house has flaked on me 3 times...
Cornwell guy spent 45 minutes BSing with me when I caught him at gas station after his shift. When I need a high quality tool I will be calling him.

Just the opposite with me. Our strap-on guy is the best ive ever dealt with. His truck is loaded with anything i may need on a whim, hes a very nice guy and will BS with you as if you are the only customer he has. A really great guy. Thats why i choose to buy from him.

Our Matco rep was a grade-A douchecanoe. he was pushy and he actually stopped coming by after 3 weeks of us not buying anything from him. Havnt seen him in months. And certainly dont miss him.

Now we have a Cornwell rep coming by and he seems alright. Kinda sheepish like he just started and isnt really sure of himself and how to interact with us. I warrantied two items with him before i bought anything just to test his character, to see if he would "douche-out" on me.

Who are your Snap On, Mac & Matco reps? I'm thinking I might have the same Mac & Matco guys but I don't think we have the same Snap On guy, if your SO guy is who I think it is I've purchased from him but wasn't impressed although he had a huge inventory on his truck.

My dealer is cool going on 4 years now dealing with him.he can be a slight jerk at times but is by far the best one if had so far.hand him a broken tool and he'll fix it on the spot if he has parts.last guy would take it for a week and hand It back to me still broken even though he "fixed it". The guy before him was a literal crackhead and tried to sell people used tools or gouge the price high and "discount" them but still above list.

I like my current dealer, besides him hassling to get a new box and always talking **** of my Mac box and dealer that never shows.he's a good guy and can joke with each other for ten-fifteen minutes when he comes around.

I have been around for tool trucks for 14 years now. I've seen the good and bad. But I do have to say that if any tool dealer had a bad attitude towards me. And if I needed a tool from that brand, I would find a dealer that wasn't him and buy it out-rite from the other guy. Or just get it online.
My snap on dealer is an awesome fella. Matco and Mac are also great guys.
I carry a balance with snap on.

that's a tough call.
some tool truck guys are just jerks. i don't know how they stay in business.

but most are nice friendly guys.

a weird example. my cornwell guy when i 1st got on the truck i thought he was a ****. now i know hes just a good guy and can dish it out like most of the guys at my shop shovel to him all day long.

Dont even remember the snap on guys name. looked like he'd been doing it for awhile though. Mac guy name is Jay i believe, cant remember the matco guy he has a beard and drives a newer truck out of all of them. Still wish Cornwelll was around though..

Both the Snap On and Cornwell guys are descent. Snap On gets more business buts that's because he's been on his route forever and you can set your watch to him. We've been through two Cornwell guys. The first one showed up whenever he wanted which was once every 3 or 4 months, and if you didn't owe him money he didn't talk to you. The one we have now has shown up like clock work and has been great to deal with.

Matco guy is amazing (Too bad I don't like their hard line tools). I buy almost everything from him. MAC guy is okay... Snap On isn't reliable at all and wouldn't warranty anything until I got him in trouble with the industrial rep.

Last city I lived in had a terrible Snap-On driver. Showed up once when I was in school, I bought some wrench rails and ordered some other tools. He never came back. Worked at a truck shop that he would come by, and I'd have nothing to do with him (and heard plenty of complaints from coworkers). A year later, part of his route went to a new driver who texted me that I owed him for the tools I never received (which I bought from the Snap-On website by that time). Told him what happened, and he let it go.

Matco & MAC dealers in the area were always great, but I was fine with finding original manufacturers of most of the tools and buying online. Bought all my Snap-On through the website or just bought the Williams equivalents.

every tool rep is different I tell all new guys you're buying the tool guy not the brand.. for the most part the big 3 (SO Matco and MAc) are all quality **** and stand behind their product.. just find a tool guy you mesh well with and who reps the brand well.. I buy both SO and matco since both guys are pretty good.. MAC showed 3 times and never showed again.. when i lived elsewhere MAC was all I bought cause the rep was great!

But this is just my opinion a lot of guys are brand biased and there are a few things here and there that are better in one brand.. but only time will tell you just gotta play the game..

My snap on guy is great. He exchanges worn out tools with no questions asked. Plus he always gives me updates every week on deals. Like the buy metric, get standard free type of deal.

My current Snappy franchisee is great. Gets my special orders in fast calls me right away. Warranties are never a problem. I've been dealing with him around 4 years. The guy before him was great too. I dealt with him maybe six years.

From what I have read on this board over the years I'm fortunate with Snapon.

I've tried to work with others (MAC, Cornwell, Indy) on and off over the years but for whatever reason it never seems to work out.

I'm in a 2 man hangar. We spend more between the two of us than most large shops I think with our snap on driver lol. It's been nothing but positive with my snap on driver, his time varies by about 30 or 40 minutes but he is there every week, even when we don't have a balance with him. He is busy but still finds time to bs or will bounce quick if we are busy, after we get a look at the weekly specials lol. Great guy, I also believe he stages the truck. He found out I like my red hard handle's and most weeks he happens to have something sitting around near the front. I know it is a hustle but I'll take it, not many people tailor their business to their customers like he does. Cornwell, Mac, and Matco won't even give us a stop.

I have 2 in my town. Both good in their own way. One guy discounts......but follows abuse rules, dont warranty wear out stuff, but he gives great deals. The other is straight out full list, but never questions any warranty, if its snap on it covered. I like the second one. You know the price, you know your covered.

We have a matco guy in town......no one knows where he goes. I have seen him once in the last 5 years mac guy was a crook and ran out of town. We also had an indy who was good, but he sold out and the new owner vanished.

This is like the new snap-on guy at my shop. Sell me the tools at full price but never even takes a second glance at the abused tools I turn in for warranty. Just hands me a replacement. A work at a production body shop and am extremely hard on my tools. He keeps me working. And that's why always buy snap-on. The day a rep denies me a warranty return is the day I stop buying from them.

mostly positive, the tools themselves are the most ergonomic and rewarding to use tools I've ever used. I take great pride in restoring USA made antique tractors with USA made tools.

dealing with Snapon.com has been a mixed bag, prices are high, initially they shipped things with no packing material, just throwing expensive wrenches in a box. I returned Blue Point tubing cutter that arrived damaged and they mailed it back to me citing no packing material when they didn't ship it with any packing material in the first place. I broke a cylinder hone and they credited me for it and broke an extractor and they sent me a new one. I tracked down the local Snap On guy at a friend's business and got his card. he lives in my town so I'll see if he'll make a monthly trip to my little home shop and start buying off the truck.

Local truck is not too impressive, not very ambitious that is. The phone service has been nothing shy of stellar for me though, so I go that route now.

OP, I would not spend a dime if some business person acted the way he did to a new potential customer, piss poor business practice!

18 years at the same shop seeing the SO truck nearly every week -- My experience has been mostly positive and I appreciate the service and the quality of the tools. In that time, I have had 2 great reps and bought a good selection of SO tools, but SO corporate has put the screws to both of the reps financially with shenanigans like forcing products on them they cannot sell and cutting their purchasing account limit so they can't order tools for customers.

In a nutshell - Love the tools, hate the corporation.

That reps attitude may be a product of the same pressure I mentioned. How long has this guy in the OP's story been in the game? 'Cuase what I see / hear all around is they are forcing out dealers to make as many trucks as possible into franchises - which = more control and more money for SO.
My first rep was a dealer who told them to stick it where the sun don't shine when they tried to control how he ran his truck after 15 years. Second one was a franchise who they canceled in under 3 years when his "numbers where not good enough" - well, SO, how do you expect him to sell any tools the techs actually need when you max out his purchasing account with a bunch of scanners you shipped / billed to him which he cannot sell because every tech on his route already has one?...not to mention a smaller account limit that gets maxxed when 2 techs on the route buy new tool boxes and no tools can get ordered then.....it's recipe for collapse that has been getting worse, IMO, since about 07 /08.....

No complaints here. In fact, I'd say I have one of the best dealers. Warranty? Pretty much like Craftsman used to be - for any reason, even if I'm not happy with it. He always lets me know about deals, and for most purchases, I'd say I get the best price possible.

Quality, combined with the service has put a lot of Snap On tools in my shop.

I've had quite good luck with my dealers, thou there was a guy when i first came to my job that was a ***** but thankfully he went belly up and the new guy is great. The prices are nuts but thats pretty much every brand and he will cut some deals and really drop prices if a bunch of guys buy the same thing like knonking of $40 on a rachet when 4 guys all bought one.

The main thing with snap on has been for the most part a constant presence that you can find a guy and they are the quickest to fill a empty route were finally after a year matco has a new dealer and the other 2 brands are constantly going belly up.

Sadly i'm thinking this is becoming the industry norm, i'm luck that my dealer is part of a 4 route ownership so they sell alot of tools and don't feel it so much as they are always selling out promotional stuff and.

The mac guy we've got i feel sorry for because he has barely been making it a go the last year or so and talking with him the stuff the pull and expect him to sell and pay is almost crippling and inturn screws his customers as orders take weeks to get in so why buy from him right?

yeah - I added some in an edit - sounds like the same BS everywhere across all truck brands.

The Matco guy I have dealt with is good, I bought a floor ******** him and when I had a problem with it it was taken care of quickly, and it's the only thing I ever bought off him.

The MAC guy was a total ****, wouldn't give me the time of day.

The Snap On guy treated me the best. I am not a tech, weekend hack at best, but he helped with with the deals as I was building my tools, I.E. the buy this get that promo's, and steered me towards the tools I would need first. I would give him a call and meet him on his route, lite BS, and always paid in full. If I don't have the cash, then I don't need it, so I never ran a truck or credit account with him.

I have also run into not so pleasant Snap On guys, so I can see what others have said. But like anything there are good reps and bad reps on both sides. I usually give people 3 chances before I write them off. We all have bad days, myself included and first impressions aren't always our best side. But 3 gives you a pretty good idea of the man.

I don't have the best credit especially starting out and snap on was able to credit me a new box when none of the other guys were able to.i know im paying a higher interest but when you need a tool and don't have all the money for it in your pocket they helped me finance it where the other companies would not.for that reason I have always had respect for snap on and have never missed a payment..and this in turn has helped my credit

I had great experience with 2 different SO truck reps in So. Florida.
Moved to North Central Florida and have never had a good SO experience since.
The SO rep won't answer his phone unless he recognizes the number.
Won't return calls if you leave a message.
Won't respond to emails.
yeah Chris Gale I'm talking about you.
I wouldn't buy a SO fire extinguisher at this point if I was watching my house
burn down.
I'm a cash customer. I GOT MONEY and want to buy tools. WTF.
I hope someone from SO corporate reads this board.

My local SO guy is great, and so is the regional rep that also had neighboring route some years ago. Truck is always fully stocked, and if he is sold out of something always has it the next week. He's been in the game forever and while he doesn't give stellar deals on stuff, repairs and replacements are always easy with no questions asked. I don't buy a lot anymore because all our tools are provided at work but whenever I need something from him I can just give him a call and he will swing in, or I can just stop at his house since he lives about a mile from me.

Sorry but if your credit is trashed you didn't need a tool truck box. Probably the last place you should be shopping. All Snap-On did was take a chance on a high risk client. If its paying off for them then they won big time, not you.

It's all online now through a great industrial rep but, many years ago in the land of flat rate, I think I had the best Snap on dealer in the world. His name was Bob Dunn. he was a corporate guy holding down a route until they sold it to some smuck, I mean franchisee. Bob would show up like clockwork each week. If you were new, you got a catalog and a pocket screwdriver. He was personable and could probably sell ice to Eskimos. He would warranty stuff, and order anything you wanted. He retired and I moved to a different job but, I still think of him as the best snap on dealer I ever had.
Whenever I have come across a dealer that acts like they're doing me a favor selling me tools, that brand no longer gets my money. There's just too many choices out there for a dealer to act that way and the best tool doesn't always come off of a truck.

we only have snap on and matco up here. the matco guy I called to to start stopping by and he made it sound like it wasn't worth his time and he never showed up. the snap on guy has been good to me. the more I buy the better I get in with him, he's treated me pretty good so far. no complaints and always handles warranties easily.

I've dealt with 3 reps now. First one dad and I found on the way home from work. Dad had an old Blue Point Compothane deadblow that was getting dried out and chipping. He replaced it with a Snap On deadblow! For a brand new walk on customer! I'll always go there if I can find him and have probably bought 1k in tools since. He also used to work for corporate but regional downsizing caused him to get a slick offer to get into a route and he's done that for 15 years. Awesome guy just can't say what a pleasure it is dealing with him.

Another guy was at the shop whose back door faced ours at a couple industrial strip buildings. He was the douche where if you weren't buying anything he didn't need to talk to you. Practically expected me to take out a loan on an epiq that day. Got an F80 because they were on ridiculous promo by coincidence and never went back.
I was on the way to return ez-outs I borrowed from a friend. I had twisted one and he didn't expect me to replace it. Saw another truck on the way there and the guy didn't take much time from comparing cell phones with a guy at that shop to deal with me. Won't deal with him again.
