I have a Craftsman 33gal 6hp upright and yes they are loud. I really didnt have a good place to put it nor did I want to hear it so I put it on a platform in the attic above the garage. I set it on some foam sheet so it wouldnt transmit the vibrations throughout the house. I can hear it but it is faint. I plumbed it down in to the garage. I wired the outlet its plugged in to down to a switch in the garage along with an air shutoff valve. It worked out great.

I have a 5hp.,2 stage Champion from TP Tool and it runs at 805rpm. You can stand at the compressor while it is running and talk in a normal tone of voice and hold a conversation without a problem. Been very satisfied with it.

Thanks for all the responses.

I sold the bike to a friend at 2PM and after some soul searching of "wants vs. actual needs" wound up hooking up my trailer at dinner time to go get an Ingersoll Rand SS5L5 from my local tractor supply tonight.

It was a grand less than the Eaton and puts out 18.1 CFM @ 90 PSI and 21 CFM at 40 PSI which is about the same as the Eaton. It also has a ton of great reviews all over the web with the exception of a couple starter capacitors burning out. The guy who bought my bike got one last year and loves it and said his is quiet enough for him.

Quiet was really important but then I realized that my air tools make more racket than the compressor which makes the extra grand spent on a super quiet compressor seem like a mute point. The difference in price will easily cover install of my air system as well as the 20 to 30 ton shop press I've been wanting.

Now I have to figure out how to get it off of my trailer. :)

Hee Hee...I think you meant 'moot' point...but I think it's funny that you used 'mute' point, when we were talking about the loudness of a compressor.

Congratulations on the new compressor...I think you'll be pleased with the performance of that unit. Make sure you post pics, when you get it hooked up!

I'd be interested to know how loud this compressor is. Your post prompted me to pop into the local TS store. The specs are pretty good on it. I wasn't sure about the pump being made in India and the Emerson motor from Mexico but the reviews are pretty good. Do you know the RPM the pump spins?

Any way you can post a youtube video? I have wanted a large compressor but never thought it feasible living in a residential neigborhood. After seeing the video of an earlier post of his 1968 IR compressor, I was amazed. I have the 5 gal Husky and i use it briefly its so loud.

They don't list the pump RPM but the motor spins at 3450 RPM and has a 4" diameter pulley. The pump has about a 14-3/8" pulley giving it a ratio of about 3.6 so the pump should spin at around 958 RPM.

I will post a youtube video after I get it up and running this weekend.

I have a 2 cylinder CH 60 gal unit. It is loud, but a thumping loud, not a buzzing loud. It only comes on about once every week or 10 days though. I turn it on and leave the shop for 5 minutes.

Here is the video.

I am really happy with the sound level. The new 5HP compressor is actually a little quieter than my Crafstman 2 HP compressor that was in my garage for the last 25+years.

I wound up using the lift to get it off the trailer. The lift comes in handy for stuff like this. Im wondering if I could make a set of forks for it?

I have a 5 HP Quincy and it was pretty loud with the OEM muffler, I put a bigger aftermarket muffler on it and it droped the noise considerably.

Could you provide some contact info. for the aftermarket muffler you used on your Quincy. I have the same, and it is a bit loud for my neighbors. Thanks,

Not loud at all. I put mine near my furnace in the basement and piped it out to the attached and unattached garage. Its no louder then the furnace.

Mine is an 80gal ingersol rand from Tractor supply that i bought for $1000. Wired a switch out to the garage so i can shut it off when i leave the garage and don't have to run down stairs when its not in use. Works great.

I was just watching some youtube videos and came across a point with one of those super quiet RoLair compressors. Those quiet compressor motors are spinning half the speed of a reg compressor so that the key. 1720 vs 3450 is alot quieter plus mufflers and silencers help but think thats a big key for all you guys running oiless. Just gotta find a motor with rpm of 1720 rpm

On a quincy 5hp, with Quincy intake Silencer, I would expect db reading about low 80.

My 3hp Craftsman oilless compressor was holy-**** loud.

My 5hp, 60hp, 2-stage Champion you can have a conversation right next to it. It's a sweet, comforting sound....like mama's heart to a baby in the womb.:)

exactly my situation, the craftsman is no measure of what a quality compressor sounds like. I cant stand to be anywhere near my craftsman, my IR 2 stage is bearable, but I put it in a seperate building and I plan to plumb the airline underground to the shop

The biggest noise coming from your compressor is from the intake.pipe you intake up in the attic or in another room and add a glass pack muffler you will be amazed how quite it turns out to be.

I just measured my HF 60 gal 2 stage with an aftermarket 6" intake filter box at 85.2db, down from 89db with the stock filter.

My Gardner Denver 5hp 60 gallon at about 3 foot away is 98.7 db at start-up and 88.8 running. it is in an enclosure and with the door closed, 25 foot away there is really no noise.

I have a 1993 Sanborn 5hp 60 gal twin cylinder that I restored. It is very quiet, I can easily hear the radio or when it kicks on. (I don't have an I-phone.) It has a very large cast iron pulley on the pump and seems to turn relatively slow which I suspect results in a lower noise level. A friend has the same size Husky compressor that seems much louder IMHO.

I have two 80gal 5 hp compressors - one is a pretty old Champion, and one is a Snap-on about 10 years old. They both sound pretty much the same and are much quieter than the Sears 6 hp oilless I had before.

The biggest difference in sound between the consumer models and the pro ones is less the sound level, but more the tone of the sound.

I recently sold a Quincy model 325 5hp 2-stage compressor in good shape. It was enormously quieter than other cheaper compressors I'd owned. Now I have a newer Champion 5hp 2-stage and it is way quieter than the Quincy was.

And I'd already put intake mufflers on the Quincy, too.

My crapsmen 30 gallon oil less is stupid loud. Any way one night i forgot to unplug it in the garage and it was leaking air for awhile till suddenly it turned on while everyone was sleeping at like 2 am it came on and woke me up from a dead sleep. Lets just say my neighbor heard it too and he thought some one was in his garage across the street
:lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

I did the same thing but it was in the living room while doing new floors and cam on at 4 am. Sounded like the end of the world bc I had no flooring down yet. That was a ****** morning

My 1940s Kellogg is very quiet, save for when it knocked when cold due to abuse(someone ran it out of oil once and chewed up a bearing). The current 325TV compressor assembly is still nice and quiet.

Here's a quick video.

The compressor is extremely quiet from across the shop. If you step outside the bay door you can barely tell it's running.

I am toying with an idea to make a super-silent intake for my compressor by using the air box and filter from a Dodge Ram truck, connected to the intake port on the compressor by a flexible thick rubber hose (1" air line hose), and mounted high up near the ceiling.

My thinking is that the big baffled airbox, large air filter and intake port on the box will dramatically reduce the percussive nature of the sound waves, after they are already softened by the 4' of 1" intake air hose.

If it works as hoped, I should only hear the motor spinning and the whir of the flywheel on the pump.

I'd think you'll be sucking out bits of the 'glass from those mufflers, which seems like a bad idea from all angles.

I thought about this hard before I did this and here is the ideas that i came up with the glass packs ware out in a car because the have unburned fuel and oil and gets hot enough to burn out the glass.on the intake side not so much.the intake is not like a turbo for air velocity the suction is from the factory is 1.5 inches the glass pack is 2.5 thus less air velocity.put you hand in front of your air intake it does not have that much suction.I figured my hearing is a pretty important to me. after running it like this I wondered why I did not do this 20 years ago.they do make intake noise suppressors for home central vac. system at you local bldg. suppliers if you think this is still a bad idea.myself could not be happier with the results.they also have glass packs that are louvered and they are directional for flow they would work even better but thats just my opinion.:lol_hitti
