Just ran into a situation at work trying to reach a turbo flange and didn't have enouph extensions to reach it. Ended up having to barrow about 16" worth of extensions to get the job done. So how many extensions do y'all have in each drive size? What lengths? Thanks!

I have the 1/4 and 3/8 drive sets from Matco, I think they're 6 or 7 piece sets.

I also have some extra long extensions going up to 3 feet in length. They come in handy for bellhousing bolts.

Can't have too many extensions. Long ones are nice, so you don't have to put a pile of shorter ones together to get a job done.

I probably have about 15 or 20 of each drive size. They are very helpful to have. Only 4 in 3/4" drive though.

I have regular/locking/wobble extensions so it adds up fast, and yes each one is helpful.

+1

I have the 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" sets from Matco. Along with some 3/8" that 34" and 42" I believe from Wright or Proto. Actually needed extensions that long on a few jobs I used to regularly do. I hated using multiple extensions in a confined space, especially since they weren't locking.

24" is pretty common for techs to have and it sounds like you need that size in your box. Personally I have in my box 1" to 24" in all 3 main drives. Don't always use them, but man, is it sure nice to have when I do need them.

Same here. I have 1" to 24"'s in various sizes from 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Extensions are cheap enough and they seem to come in every set as filler.

While no pro and no pro tools...

Dad and I rebuild automatic transmissions for friends and family only. I hate chinese tools as much as the rest of you, but I have several sets of really long extensions I bought from a flea market type place. The longest is about 3'..and they step down to about 16".

Yes I have broken two of them. OUCH!

I have not seen any reasonably priced extensions that long anywhere that are not chinese.

3/8 drive is what I use most. So there are at least:

1 ea 2'
2 ea 1'
5 ea 6"
3 or 4 ea 4"
2 or 3 ea 2"
and
1 lonely 1" or 1.5" (can't remember)

Unmentioned, is a hand ground extension of unknown length, and I forget what I

needed it for anyway.

I "built" my socket collection from Craftsman socket sets. Most did not come with any extensions so I added them over the years.

1/4" - 6"
3/8" - 1.5", 3", 6", 12" (IIRC)
1/2" - 3", 6", 15"

Extensions are one of those things you can't have to many of in different lengths and styles. Regular extensions in lengths from 1" to 36". Then you throw in wobble and locking extensions in sizes 3-12". Wobbles and locking extensions are great.

I'll sit here with a beer and watch you try to get the socket onto the lugnut from that distance. Should be entertaining. :spit:

I think that video would be a hit on youtube. :D

If a guy with no arms can swap tires with an impact on a car, I'm sure somebody can use that long of an extension. Never under estimate the power of the mind.

Without looking, I know I have enough usually but I know I need more....in a typical GJ fashion. :bounce:

I have enough that I don't have to buy more but not enough that I won't buy more for the right price. Probably 5-10' per drive size 1/4"-1/2" and a couple of 3/4" ones.
