How many grinding steps for a polished floor?

Want to polish some concrete for a finished interior application and was considering taking on the project myself---

The room has baseboard -- it is a new construction so they are not finished yet --- is it recommended to pop those off or tape them -? (i used 6" oak, so dont want to mess them up--

I have also read that 3 steps wont result in a true polished appearance but i should take 5 steps ending with 2000 grit

---- do you just do the corners with a palm sander or something?

How flat is the floor?
How course of a finish is on the floor currently?
How polished do you want to go?

Typically 2-3 steps will get you a very nice but somewhat satin polish

More steps, less stress on tooling and a better outcome.

Thanks guys --- AFAIK ? Its a pretty flat floor --- its new(ish) with a smooth trowel finish --- basic concrete slab

a satiny finish would be great actually -- i just want to strip enough away to expose that little bit of aggregate and then clear --- its for a home bar/(shudder to use the word "man cave" again --- but its a bar/football watchin' room that will be somewhat dimly lit most of the time )
