Thanks all for the education.

The interesting thing is that at work I only have three, a 32 oz Blue Point ball peen, an old Craftsman rubber and plastic tip hammer, and a cheap tool store medium size dead blow.

I need to trade off some claw hammers for ball peen and dead blows but I think 17 is a good number.

I've been spending my evenings this week gathering my home tools from scattered everywhere and putting them into the toolbox.

Fourteen hammers. There's also a couple sledgehammers around too.

What's the normal person amount?

ahh quite easy to answer,

from what I see, you need "just one more..." to have the normal amount....

that's always the answer.... "honey, I just need one more...."

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner! BTW, this applies to clamps as well as it does to hammers.

My first thought was that I have 6 or 7. But I thought more about it and I believe I have 13. There are a few more that I think might come in handy if I find a good deal so I'll probably end up with about 17.

So, 17 is the normal amount of hammers a person should have.

Who cares what's considered "normal"? Hell, buy as many hammers as you see fit. . .

Then mount them on a 10'x20' pegboard and post a picture on GJ.

Personally, I have about 25 hammers of various types and am always looking for different types. I really need to start building my body hammer/dolly set...
