I am planning on around 30 or so for my 40X40X15. I would really reconsider the T12 in favor of the T8's. T12's will not be availible forever, and are less efficient. I have been happy with the T8's I have tested. I like the daylight bulbs for more light though.

a rule of thumb is 1W/sq ft...
but the more the better
strategically locate them...
focused work areas, more
open areas, less

total wattage ~ 12 x 2 x 80 ~ 1920
area ~ 30 x 40 ~ 1200
W/ft^2 ~ 1920/1200 ~ 1.6

I'ld go with the 12 fixtures...
4 rows of 3
rows 10' on center, 5' on the sides ~ 40'
each row, 2' between fixtures, 1' on each end ~30'

put 2 switched circuits in, alternate fixtures in the open areas, put all the work areas on the same circuit...

In my 32x32 with 12' ceilings I have 8 8' HO fixtures. It is plenty bright but that is never a problem.
