811 only locates city water lines and power lines etc. They won't located the line you ran yo your shop unless you pay for private utilities to ve marked or.sokething like that. It says this in bold ink. They only locate public lines
Right after we moved here 16 years ago cable was run down my road, so I signed on for internet. When the locator guy came to sweep my side and back yard areas for the cable burial crew, I commented that it looked like the new cable would miss my shop power feed ok. He said no problem, let’s see, and swept and marked the line basically just to be a good guy and let me know exactly how it ran all the 80 feet to my shop. He was the recipient of a cold glass of iced tea, shade, and some treats afterwards. I buried a crumb trail of metal hardware along the line to use as a guide with a metal detector when I ran water and a line from my shop sewage pump to my septic tank.

It's always nice to be there when they show up. The locators around here and the people who take the locate requests at the office don't have a clue otherwise.

i have not done work in alameda county. i prefer to stay away from the east bay as bad as it is
I can see that with paperwork.

When i moved from the area, i kept and rented out my house. I needed a handyman type on call. Took $100+/hour even 5 years ago. The guys were hacks too with low skills, poor and slow work, would refuse many jobs, and would disappear after a year or so. It was surreal bad. I had to start flying in 1x or 2x a year and do a regular flurry of work to keep the place in shape. Was cheaper and was only way wih much special stuff linked to hillside homes.
