The key word here is repair. You fix it in the field. The engineers will design a solution that will eliminate the failures.

Engineers Make the thing's that cause failures :lol_hitti Then mechanics and fabricators who have to build it and work on it say "NO you dumb hippy! that wont work!"

This shows every every day, you all know what i am talking about.

I always wanted to be an engineer, ahh working on the railroad, driving the train, and the uniforms kick ***. The only woes are having to deal with the pompous conductor.

I trained as an Ag technician but have also worked on heavy equipment. I have about 6 years experience in Ag and 2 years on H.E. I only work on equipment about 20% of the time these days.

I'm almost 23 and have been working on cars at Carmax for about 2 1/2 years now. I didn't go to school for it but grew up around it, started out as a lube tech./tech. apprentice then 5 months later went to a flat rate tech. I really enjoy the challenge of working on such a wide variety of cars.

age 0 -18: helped the old man in the garage(he was a 45 year journeyman)

age 18 - 22: worked my way up in several machine shops and had the opportunity to work with several very "seasoned" machinists and toolmakers.

age 22 - 23: air compressor tech for a Sullair dealer.

age 23-current: be a ******* and work on tow trucks.

I'm turning 34 in July and have been doing it the "wrecker way" for ten years now. I mainly build new trucks but I have also done everything in the shop from oil changes, hydraulic and power take off repair, electrical trouble shooting, fabrication, welding, frame stretching and axel rolls.
It's interesting work but can get a little boring after ten years.

EVERYDAY at work I learn something new(and sometimes something I forgot!).

I'd love to do that. My dream is to eventually own a shop that builds special trucks for oilfield/logging/wreckers/harsh environments etc.. industries.

Started working on British cars in the UK when the MGB was still in production. Went to working on Ferrari for several years during the era of the 308GTB and then to Porsche.
No longer in the workshop, but still enjoy the challenge.

Everyday is a learning day.

I'm just a beginner at a Kenworth dealership, I've been there one month. I'm 20 and I've grown up around trucks and went to school for it right out of high school.

I am an MMI trained Harley tech who hasn't been working for the past month. I must say I realized that a flat rate shop was not for me. I was going to school at night but have switched to full time and will have my Bachelors in less than 8 months.

Like a couple others here... just a code monkey 'cause that's what I knew how to do after I left school.

I admire the good work you techs do.. I wish I knew a fraction of what you know.

A&P for 10 + years ... used to work for an airline... thinking of switching professions as being a tech isn't all that fun anymore that and the job market just outright stinks.

we dont have any in Canada other than for driver and maintenance training .. :( and they go from base to base ...

That *****. I read Mercedes-Benz got a contract from the Canadian army to supply trucks. Are they solely for driver and maintenance training or are there more on the way? They look mean!

Don't you also use Steyr trucks? You posted a pic of one of your rigs before and it looked like a Steyr.

Check out their series 40 or 50.Can't remember which but it'll look familiar when you see it.

The 40 is the DT466(I think) and the 50 is the 4 cylinder series 60......that is kind of confusing.:headscrat

That'd definetly be the series 40.

Googled it.

When in the hell did that happen?

Ill never look at a 466 the same again. They feel so wrong and dirty now.

Are any of the army mechanics tempted to buy some of their own tools and use them on the job? Or is there a restriction on this; only use gov't supplied tools?

Let's say that we are not supposed ... but .. nobody will ever ask me if it's the queen's tool or mine .. :D

but with the tool supplied we dont care about breaking or loosing a tool .. ;)
