I refuse to answer because, I don't want to be on the show hoarders, or want someone to stage an intervention. :bounce:

It's funny scrolling through an old thread seeing names and avatars from long ago.

I now have around 25 or 30 different round head ratchets. I had to give them their own drawer. Addicting it is. Guy told me I am suffering from depression and this is how I cope......sure is fun :)

Just happen to be taking a break from cleaning and lubing my ratchets when I saw this thread, not as many as most but enough to handle most jobs I tackle

Probably like 15-20, IDK I dont count them. I can tell you I know from memory I must have somewhere between 4-6 of each drive size and the 2-3 of each size for breaker bars

Umm...
At home...
3 1/4", 6 3/8" and 1 1/2"... so 10.

At work...
3 1/4", 4 3/8", and 1 1/2"... so 8. Lol.

I didn't count until just now. I guess I fall under "Pro" because I get paid to turn wrenches and fix junk. My home ratchets are nicer than my work ratchets, but there is a story to that. My work sockets are nicer than my home sockets, but my wrenches are a good 50-50 split. Lol.

Might add a couple more ratchets to the boxes on general principle. Like others, I like them.

I have at least 20 at home, but that is spread between the garage, basement, and two tool sets that I can take places easily. At work, I have a single 3/8 and one of those little Wera Bit-Check sets that use driver bits. I really only use a couple of them, but "Lifetime tools that your grandkids will inherit" means that I ended up with more tools than I'll ever need.

When this thread was started back in 2010, that's pretty much what I had, three Craftsman RP ratchets (1/4", 3/8", 1/2") from the mid 1980s. Those were my go to ratchets because that's all I had and they seemed to work just fine. I never considered acquiring more becuase I didn't need them. Still, if you hang around this website long enough, your latent lust for tools will emerge, others will encourage and enable you, one thing will lead to another and the next thing you know you've acquired more tools than you ever thought you would......Anyway, now I have closer to 30 ratchets but I still mostly use the three original Craftsman RPs I got back in the 1980s.

Jim C.

A little while back, I got hooked on old Craftsman RP ratchets, mostly trying to collect all the variations of the classic teardrop versions that were manufactured between 1956 and 1993..... I have close to 50 ratchets now. I still almost exclusively use the original three I got with my first set of tools back in the 1980s.

Non pro, I'd guess at around 12-15. Don't need much, but I do demand to have backup for everything I have. If one is good, then two is just right.

If you ask my wife, I own 3 of them. What she doesn't know won't hurt her.

The real answer is the same answer I give when asked how many guns I own. It's more than I need, but less than I want.

In the case of ratchets, I'd guess 50-60 of them.

I'm just starting to get my toolbox in order (received my grandpa's vintage NAPA New Britain upper and lower roller). I probably have more than I need for working on personal cars, but I like the idea of having one for most every situation. Does anybody think this is unreasonable? I'd prefer to have all USA, but I couldn't justify cost vs amount of use.

1/4
SK (came with socket set)
SK finger
HF Pittsburgh Pro flex
New Britain driver (grandpa's)

3/8
SK (came with socket set)
SK finger (came with socket set)
SK bent handle flex (got it because I love using my dad's)
SK swivel (collecting)
SK FT swivel (collecting)
Craftsman RP (first tool set 20+ yrs ago)
HF P Pro flex
HF P Pro long flex
HF P Pro 1/4+3/8 extendable (probably gets the most use)
HF P Pro 1/4+3/8 wrench ratchet
HF P Pro 1/4+3/8 long flex wrench ratchet (great for plug changes in tight quarters)

1/2
SK (came with socket set)
Craftsman RP (first tool set)
Craftsman, just says "Forged in USA," with oil port (grandpa's, seen better days)
HF P Pro flex
HF P Pro long flex
HF P Pro extendable

I have 7 in my work box. All are used on a regular basis. I'm looking to get a 1/4" flex at some point. After that, I think I have all the bases covered.

Probably have somewhere between 5 and 10 in various places (home, vehicles, etc)

Rebuilt loads of classic cars and land rovers with them.

About a half-dozen 1/4"
At least 20 3/8"
9 1/2" that I can lay hands on, probably more in my truck
Not counting things like old New Britain Ratchets with the removable square peg, the 1930s SK roundhead or the other weird stuff that "could" be used, but is more fun to NOT polish

no pro. i don't have a head count, but rather a ballpark estimate. i have perhaps 35+ Snap-on ratchets from the 1920s to current production, a few Blue-Point USA 1/2" drive examples (UR71), 11 or 12 Plomb and then the others.

Non pro. Before I found this site, I had 2 ratchets (only 1 of which I really used) and 1 ratcheting torque wrench. With them, I could handle any job I needed to. Now I have 11 ratchets, 3 ratcheting torque wrenches, and "need" several more.

I believe I'm at 34...ish now. All U.S. made. Several Snap On which are used most often, followed by some SK and Armstrong and one Wright, followed by 2 full line ups of Craftsman Premium USA 72T. Following that is a few of the Craftsman low profile and a few of the Craftsman raised panel which honestly never get used. Then there's a Mastercraft ratchet which I actually have never used, ever, it just came with a socket set I picked up to keep in the truck in case of emergency.

I'm approaching 50, not counting the Asian imports in the car trunk. I'll have 3 more when the new SKs become available.

And the picture doesn't include the ones in socket sets

More than i need to, for sure; but variety is the spice of life. Also nice when you have something break and have an immediate on hand replacement, which recently happened to me...broke my 3/8 proto xl on a brake job and had to finish it up with my trusty sk in a diamond 3870 roto ratchet.

7 that I use.

Work Truck
  • 1/4 drive for use with a socket set.
  • 1/4 drive dedicated with 5/16 deep socket for no hub couplings, dryer vent hose, etc.
  • 3/8 drive flex head for sockets or crowsfoot wrenches.

Bronco (Trail/Home Use)

  • 1/4 drive.
  • 3/8 drive.
  • 3/8 drive flex head with offset handle. Doubles as a speed wrench.
  • 1/2 drive.

Plus sets of ratcheting box wrenches in both trucks, and a dedicated 7/16" & 1/2" wrench for setting toilets.

18 in my box including palm ratchets and a bit ratchet, have about 6 more laid about in workshop and mobile tools.
Just a usual mix of standard, stubby, flexi head, swivel head, long handle and large extending 1/2" . mix of makes from koken, britool, gearwrench, kamasa japan and werkzeug.

There used to be dozens as I hunted for the best for me.

Now six antiques on display and two in the small drive sizes at work. I don't use more than that and sold off all the 2nd best and reserve units.

It didn't hurt to reel in the numbers and go with the quality and features that serve me best.

A related side note is my boss now has two dozen ratchets that used to be mine and only really uses the same two models I stuck with.
All those Asain pearhead clones he loved so much got benched. Facom is in the front line working.
