So after running into a great deal on a 50 piece precision screwdriver set in the hot deals, I began to think about this...

It goes something like this:

Hello, My name is Dan. I'm a Screwdriver-holic."

I've got a few Snap-on sets, small ones, big ones, green ones, yellow ones. I've got carpenter ones. Stainless steel ones, magnetic ones. long ones. Craftsman sets, kobalt, wood handled...

You get the idea. I suppose I'm in the 200-300 range if you were to count them. I never have.

I'm sure I'm not alone. Anyone else want to confess? :D

I collect them and there probably won't be enough. I stash them all over as I always find myself needing one and I don't want to head out to the garage to get one.

"How many Screwdrivers are too many??!"

One more than I currently have. :)

For me, screw drivers are like tape measures. I can never have to many because I am always misplacing the ones I have... :willy_nil

I am in the same but much smaller boat...

Over the years as I have upgraded the quality of my screwdrivers, I have failed to part with the old ones. I probably have around 75 in the drawer.

However, there is hope. As I have become more and more frustrated with the screwdriver drawer becoming wedged shut and having to remove the drawer above it to clear the logjam, it has made me rethink my ways.

The herd has been getting slowly culled as I occasionally grind, chop, or weld an old one into a sacrificial specialty tool.

How many is too many? I don't know, but it's a lot, if you can even have too many!

For a start, I like to have both metric and imperial sized drivers. If I need a 1/4 inch screwdriver to take a screw out of a valuable Jag then that's a 1/4 inch driver I need, not an undersized 6mm! So that accounts for my comprehensive Snap On and PB Swiss sets! Include Pozidriv, Phillips and Torx too!

Would I use either for acquiring rusted parts in the scrapyard. Nope, so realistically you need some older/cheaper ones as well, which in my case are a mixed bag of British made Stanley and generic German.

Do I need a seperate set for my road box, well yes, makes life easier, and I have a couple of road boxes/ bags depending on what I'm doing.

Do I need seperate drivers for woodwork? Probably not, but I do (proper cabinet drivers) and some tough Pozidriv's for modern crappy woodscrews. What about seperate drivers for electrical work? Yep, pretty much essential for terminals.

On top of that I have a big box of 'non standard' sizes (surprisingly useful) and a box of 'instrument' tools which include things such as 3/32, 5/32 and 7/32 which are standards here. And I used to work in the defence industry so have loads of small 'set's' of tools for working on specific things!

How many altogether? I dread to think, but unless I become a professional 'gentleman' which is unlikely this month, they're all needed!

I must have several hundred, darn things call my name at garage sales. Funny thing but last week I was at an old barn type sale and of all things I picked up an old vessel screwdriver (my first one); after hearing about them on the GJ I was surprised to see one in the in the wild as they say.

It's OK, you don't have to many screwdrivers. You need more tool boxes or just need a bigger tool box. Seems to be a common issue here on GJ.

It seems like I had a few screwdrivers to meet my needs and then one day I realized I have a few hundred. Funny thing is, my son was in the garage with me awhile back. He went into the house and told his mom I might have an obsession. She asked him if he knows what that means. "Yes", he replied, "Dad has to many". Nothing like throwing Dad under the bus. What is wrong with kids these days?

3 sets and I am torn between thinking I have too many and one more would do the trick nicely. If you aren't collecting then look at it this way - if you have multiples that you do not touch in a month, then you have too many of that item.

I'm up to about 100 not counting all the ones that are nearing the end of their life.

I don't know about "too much" per say, but I am quickly switching over to bit holders for the majority of my screwdrivers for the versatility of being to quickly use a power driver to quickly remove/install the fasteners and then just swapping the bit to a handle for final manual tightening.

For all the slotted, fixed-blade screwdrivers, I am swapping them all out to the cabinet tip, hollow ground style. I disliked slotted screws with a passion--that is until I had a chance to use some really nice cabinet tip, hollow ground slotted screwdrivers about 5 years ago. It was a life changing event! All the keystone tipped slotted drivers are "saved" for prying/chiseling duties. I have so many keystone slotted drivers that I may never need to buy dedicated "chisel drivers" in my lifetime.

I'm at a point where I'm trying to take out the redundancy of my sets, and the most common fasteners I run into are Phillips, Slotted, Torx, and Metric Hex, so I always have the basics for those in every box. It would be great if I didn't have to worry about Imperial Hex and if we can finally standardize slotted sizes as well.

I ordered that Wiha set too! But in my case, it's for work (laptop/tablet repair), and I'm simply upgrading from various ebay/dollar store chinesium drivers that strip out after a dozen uses.

With the frequency that my snapon guy comes through the ship with screwdriver sets for sale, it’s no wonder some guys have “too many” of them.

IN A MONTH:banhim: Give a fellow a little more time then that, like a decade or so

My screwdriver drawer at home is getting a bit full and I need to cull the herd a bit myself. I have gotten to the point that if the tip is worn, it gets tossed, but not before the handle is removed if its a nice handle.

If you have 10 versions of the same screwdriver and you have not touched more than three of them in the past 10 years.....
You might have too many...

I’ll agree with the op. I have a problem especially with Wiha Drivers. 68 give or take a few.
50pc precision set , 5pc precision set, 5pc insulated, and 8pc extra heavy duty.

I also have Snap on ratcheting in 3 sizes + Stubbies and 4in1s. And plenty of other odd ball and off brand stuff. Total’s got to be 100+ And if they are beat they go in the can unless their the snap on’s...

"How many screwdrivers are too many?"

When you get double vision. When you can't stand up.

In the long term, when you get DT's, or cirrosis of the liver.

I see one heck of an assortment of awls, mini-aligning tools, picks, seal pullers and other tools in the making.. You are not the Lone Ranger; Unless I don't like the handle, the outcasts stay in a bucket; awaiting re-reconglooberation into a new tool.

I'm with you on the need for properly-sized screwdrivers to fit the fastener. Makes all the difference in the world. You can make a 1/2" wrench work on a 13 mm hex, but it's a hack. Klein screwdrivers fit US electrical terminals better than Hazets, and Wiha drivers work better on BMW hose clamps than Craftsman. Use the right tool for the job! Plus, you get to collect more tools.

That said, I probably have 60 - 70 all together. Haven't ever had the urge to count (yet). Maybe I'll get back to you on that.

I hate chasing for them so I have them everywhere. But I suppose if you run out of space, that may be a clue you have reached a limit.

I have 2 drawers and a rack on the bench and some in the truck toolbox and I keep buying
I think my problem is I keep finding ones I like better, and there are always ones I can't pass up at sales either, like Klein screwdrivers with the black cushion handle, I find them all the time for cheap and can't leave them there.

I refuse to buy any more screwdrivers. I had so many that it jammed any drawer in my toolbox and so I culled down to just the ones I liked, the Bonney set, the Craftsman clear handle set I got when I was 15 years old, a couple green handle Snap-on and one Harbor Freight special set that is my beater set the rest went to Goodwill. The rest that went were everything from Great Neck to Stanley to god knows what. I just got tired of the mess and I never used them so they are gone.

I have a Makita screw gun I really like and if that will not fit I have 4 Snap-on ratcheting screwdrivers in various configurations that I like and I kept those.
