OK,...OK,...OK,....How many Vises do you have?

Step up to the plate and confess how many you have collected.

I am relatively new to Vise Collection as I have 15 Vises. And thats not counting my Woodworking Vises, which would add 11 more.

It all depends, right now I have only 2 because I sold the others off. It is swap meet season so I am sure the stable will be full again come fall.

I had one woodworking vise and one machinist's vice before joining The Garage Journal.

Now I have three woodworking vises and six machinist's vices.

I'm up to 8 but I don't collect. They each have their different uses. I want one more for something specific.

Looks like I'm th odd man out. I have only two. One larger 6" Reed vise that now sits atop my workbench in my garage and one smaller 4" Wilton (newer cheapie) vise that sits atop a smaller bench in my shed.

I have one metal vise in the garage, and one woodworking vise in the woodworking shop. If either one wears out, I will replace it with a new one.
If I don't use something I don't keep it.

I think I have 8. Granted, some are older oddball vises so they don't take up much space. Most just come from Craigslist sales near my home or work. In greater Chicago there is no shortage of affordable vises.

I don't collect vises, but I like to have them wherever I might need one to be handy for what I do in that space.
I currently have 8 vises, but will get rid of two small Japan units in my next yard sale.

Wait, we're not counting drill press vises and mill vises, are we?

I have an 8" Wilton bullet in the garage and a 3" Wilton down in the basement. I also have a small clamp on vise around somewhere. So that puts me at 3, not counting the two cracked Dunlops that I will be getting rid of soon.

I will have a old Reed sometime soon but that is also damaged and will need parts/restoration. I'd also like to get my hands on a Yost manufactured in Muskegon, MI. One day...

Even with my shoes off, I still can't count them all.

I can, but I cheated and counted them by type of vise... :eyecrazy:

Yes we are, heck I still consider a workmate to be a vise, because if it wasn't, I wouldn't own even one!

Homeowners 11
hand vise 3
mini post style 2
drill press 3
mill vise 2
technician's vise 4 - (Panavise)

I'm in for 14 , mostly smaller display items. The big ones are a Columbian 605-M5 and a Rock island built Craftsman of similar size. 2 Athols , 2 Rock Islands , a Prentiss N.Y., An American Scale (p.o.s.), a Simplex 350 , A Columbian #43, 3 no name clamp ons , and a shop project drill press vise......And I'm looking for a Parker "Art Deco " style...

Edit : I forgot about my rusted up non functional no name Post Vise , make that 15 total

The big collectors in which there are many only lurk thru these threads. They buy to collect and often pay well above wholesale depending on condition. There are a few GJ member with good size collections. Zoom definitely is in that pack.

Ok, then I am up to 15, since I also have two mill vises, a drill press vise, three workmates and a panavise that I forgot about until Outlaw mentioned them.

Three - an Erie 104, a Starrett 924, and a Wilton Shop King. The Shop King is mostly for gunsmithing, and the 104 and 924 are in the garage.

I'd like a Prentiss Bulldog, but shipping on them is insane.

I have more than Autopts.....but less than Zoomie (and Outlaws). Demoman has bigger ones and Bigcaddie has smaller ones (so does Zoomie). SweetD has nicer ones and so does Banjosavestheday. I hope that clears things up.

I have ...
- 6 bench vices
- 2 wood vices
- 3 drill press vices

Four of my bench vices are Records (Nos. 3, 4, 6 & 8) and 1 is a Woden (No. 1) which is basically the same as a Record. I also have one of those "ubiquitous" massive rotating Asian vices that spins and twirls, has pipe jaws and was finiished with a coat of body fill before it was painted. It's a great vice and was only about $54.95 when bought new in the 80's. It sits outside in all kinds of weather waiting to be beat on ... and that's where it will stay.

My Wood vices are Record No. 53's. My drill press vices are pretty basic off shore vices that generally get the job done.

I never pass up a good deal on a vice. I bought a second Woden No.1 at a flea market last month for $15. I was happy to pass it on to a friend for the same price. I bought a Record No. 3 last year for $25, did a simple restoration on it (no new jaws) and sold it to another friend for $30 because he needed a decent vice. He was getting by with a new but terrible off shore vice that he probably paid 3 times as much for so I was glad he upgraded.

What is a mini post style? No pin vises?

And That is exactly the reason we are here for you! When you go grab that next vise that you "need", you know we will support you.
