Re: How many vises do you own?

Wait a minute...you got a 5 inch Columbian free and paid 10 bucks for a 4 1/2 inch Reed ?

You ****!

The others were great deals too BTW

Thanks there was a period of time where because of GJ I was all vises all day. I had a streak of luck. My dad gave me the Columbian which was purchased new in 1958 installed in a high school machine trades classroom. Looks like it was used maybe twice. The Reed came out of a machine shop, iirc it's from 1910s.

I've been on the hunt for a big'un but people always want too much $ even in poor shape. My luck is limited to 5" and under.

Re: How many vises do you own?

I estimate 40-50. I cannot count them right now since most of them are packed up for my shop reorganization. I have about 30 "minatures" of 3 inches or less including a mint Athol#O with one inch wide jaws and a couple of the 1888 pattern vises. There are four woodworking vises, three drill press vises, a cross slide vise, and a new 6" Kurt milling vise. The metalworking vices start with Penneypinchers and go up to a 6" Yost. Someday I will have one of those 500 pound Railroad vises and I will be happy.

I don't understand the part about "how many will you keep?". Why would you get rid of a vise you went to the trouble to acquire?

Re: How many vises do you own?

I have a 4 1/2" Reed, a columbian 4 1/2", an import 2" and two brand new vises I just won from the do it best contest. Both Irwin imports. One is a 6" and the other is a wood vise.
The Reed takes most of my abuse. The Columbian I just got a couple weekends ago but I didn't notice someone welded on it behind the jaw insert. I plan on using it however. If it shits the bed I'm only out $20 I'll keep the parts to save another one.

Re: How many vises do you own?

Hmmmm....this one has me thinking a bit. I've got 4 mill vises that I know of, a shaper vise, at least 2 screwless vises, there was three bench vises stashed behind the mill when I cleaned, one on the bench in the basement and one underneath, that's at least 12 that I can think of.

Re: How many vises do you own?

I went with 41-50, but it may only be about 35. They are spread around 3 different locations including ones buried in storage so an accurate count isn't possible at this time.

Re: How many vises do you own?

I voted 6-10, but I didn't count my three or four machinist vises. I only use one of those anyway.
Hoping to acquire this (probably or hopefully both of those) in the near future:

Re: How many vises do you own?

Just joined GJ today. I have at least 85 vises of all sorts. Most are US made. Right now I have some big bench vises. A 8 1/2" Columbian, a 7" Rock Island chipping vise. a 7" Athol, a 7" Parker, a 7" Prentiss with rear swivel jaw, two 6" Columbian, a 6" Reed, a 6" Craftsman made by Rock Island. I'll try to figure out how to post some photos. I forgot some 15" wide jaw Shaper Planer vises if those count.

Lineshaft, welcome to GJ. And we would really appreciate viewing your collection.

Since this is a poll thread it might be better to post them here.

I own four.

A Wilton 5" mechanic's bench vise.
Glacern 5" lock down machine vise on my mill.
Dayton 4" drill vise on my Jet 20" floor mounted drill press.
Dayton 5" drill vise that I use as a welding vise for my welding table, not affixed.

Re: How many vises do you own?

Lineshaft: welcome to the forum and you come fully armed for this group. do you have pictures saved to your cell phone or laptop? if you do i use the paperclip just above where you are writing your posts and you can download one picture at a time up to 7 per posts. if you want to make 10 or 15 posts to show off all your vises that's certainly ok with me and probably the rest of us.

DD: cool little stand and Reed 406. just curious how you keep it from rolling around. do tell and can you post a few more pictures?

ALL: i still haven't posted a # on the poll so also curious who posted the over 100 vises. do tell and post some pictures?

cheers

Re: How many vises do you own?

WT1: if you do find a vise you can build a stand or even mount it to a wall. here's a thread with a few ideas and the last post has a member's vise mounted to his wall in his man cave garage.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799&highlight=vise+stands

my first vise i bought 30 years ago was a Zyliss and i still own it. i could mount it to the side of my deck or to a 2 x 4 if i didn't have a bench handy.

good luck and i know there are a few members in Texas that might sell you one of their vises if you need one so just ask.

Interesting...

Re: How many vises do you own?

very interesting post I would have thought from all the hoopla that you guys would have the vise market cornered by now seeing how vises on CL are going for insane prices thanks in part to some of you guys!

If I took out all the vises for wood working and the small ones for the drill press then my count would stand around 11.

Re: How many vises do you own?

In The Beginning…...
I had only one vise. It was a 6" Record and it became the nucleus of all things mechanical in my garage shop. With the acquisition of that 6" vise I was able to go out and expand my tool arsenal in other directions. That one vise was like a catalyst, the centre of the universe in my garage.

After 20 years nothing changed until I was away and the place was ransacked and I lost everything including my vise. I went through a very dark period for another 20 years with no tools, changed occupations to a shirt and tie deal, just totally went downhill. Until one day I went to an auction and bought a 6" vise (and a chainsaw). I wasn't married at the time but I had a beautiful assistant who worked for me and I guess I let it slip that I'd bought these tools and man did she hit the roof. A married guy will stand his ground when his woman tears a strip off him but I sat there dumbfounded kind of in shock and felt kind of guilty over it for the next 5 years or so that they sat in storage as I lived in a one room with kitchen privileges kind of arrangement.

After those 5 years of storage I finally got a house with a garage and have posted how elated I was when I pulled a kitchen cabinet off the wall, dragged it into the garage and mounted that vise. I think I just sat there with it for an hour in total tranquillity. It wasn't till I joined GJ that I decided I should really get a full run of Record #'s 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. (I only have 0, 2, 3, 4 and 6 presently).

Anyway the purpose of this post is to get the members who are content with just 1 or 2 vises not to be intimidated by the vise junkies here and to come forward and post to the poll. If CIA, CSIS, M5 etc etc would come forward and release the actual statistics on how many vises are in each garage worldwide I'm bettin the average is more like 1 or 2. One vise did it for me for many many years and so far we've only heard from 250 people out of how many users??? C'mon guys, post em up.
