Re: How many vises do you own?

29, + or --, but one is broken and I gave one away.

Largest is Craftsman bench vise 4 1/2" jaws, wearing soft jaws and side arm "holstered" in the left hole of the swivel base (stiff brass wire stuck in an awl handle, for pushing pins off files)
Not the largest vise in existance but plenty for me.

In line with it, about 2 1/2 feet away, is an only slightly smaller Chas. Parker (my favorite maker) so something long -- like, a solid front axle -- can be held in a sturdy way.

My smallest vise is an antique leg vise, 1 3/8" wide jaws and weighing... 6 1/2 ozs., for watchmakers, who would clamp a "turns" (tiny bow lathe) or block of wood with a groove in it (to support work for filing), although often they just nicked the front edge of the bench to catch a piece while filing it. From the bottom where the legs join to the top of the jaws it is 3 3/8 ".

It's not as small as the working machine vise I saw on the table of a model milling machine, at a museum in Cleveland, in a working model of an old style machine shop. Maybe 1/2 to 3/4" long, like 1/12 to 1/24th scale. Wow.

I am in the weird situation. I have three , but two of them are still new in box and sit at shelf. One craftsman prof one Wilton bullet. I feel one vise is enough for me

Re: How many vises do you own?

Currently I have at least 110 that I could find, not including the 20 or so hand vises. Most of them are the smaller clamp on style. Sizes range from a 6 in. No. 577 Rock Island to a 3/8 X 3 7/8 blacksmiths leg vise made from brass.
The rarest is a Paul Hamler miniature Wilton bullet with 1/2 in. jaws and a length of 2 5/8 in. It consists of 23 separate parts and is one of only 7 in this size. Everything works, including the swivel base and the hold downs.
Without pictures it didn’t happen, so here are a couple.

Mike

Re: How many vises do you own?

-Stanley Handyman H1207 clamp-on vise, 1-9/16" jaws
-Reed No. 23-1/2 swivel base utility vise, 3.5" jaws
-Prentiss No. 19-1/2 swivel base swivel jaw vise, 4" jaws
-Reed 204-1/2 swivel base vise, 4.5" jaws
-Columbian 505-M2 fixed base vise, 5" jaws
-no name precision grinding/milling vise, 2.5" jaws (adapted to work on my Atlas bench top horizontal mill)

So 6 for me

All good vises, with different uses. Plus I don't have a lot invested. The milling vise and Columbian were freebies. The Stanley was $1 at a yard sale. Reed 23-1/2 was $20. Reed 204-1/2 was $10. Prentiss was $40.

Wow 3 yrs later, only still have 1 of those vises (Reed 23-1/2). I've had a few come and go. And got a couple pretty cool keepers. Right now I have 6...same # lol!

Re: How many vises do you own?

I think it'd be real interesting to run this same poll again and see if the average number has gone up? I'm willing to bet that this forum alone has contributed to an increase in vise collectors around the country. And I count myself among them...

:shocking:I just counted 42 -- twice as many as I thought:shocking:

(counting several non-operable at the moment- but I'm going to fix them!).

Re: How many vises do you own?

Who counts their vises? Does this include the ones that are stored/hidden inside or is the count just for those in the shop? Assembled only? Do broken ones count as 1/2?

I only ask because I am in Florida and we have lots of rules about how we count things.

Wow,
I started this thread 3 years ago and thought all along it was dead. But like a zombie, it has started to walk around again!

I had 10 when I started this thread and now I have over 75!

That’s a 650% increase in 3 years right?

At that rate I’ll have 500 vises by the end of 2021.

Re: How many vises do you own?

I have a couple but really use 1. If a guy is a collector it doesn't matter but if I want to work I want a rotator if I can help it. As important is its mounting and location.

Take a look at the above video and see Abom 79 tour Andrew Alexander's shop that claims over 700 vises and near that many anvils, along with many other great pieces of old iron. There is a part 2 vid on the same tour.

Too funny! Hi Mike ! I just put some vises up for display, took some pics to add to the vise thread, and I see this poll.
And who do I find here, Mike ! I shoulda known !
Folks, those vises look even better in person!

So my count is 51. I say I was sneaking up on Mike but I know he is pretty serious about collecting. I am a little more casual, and cheaper to boot !
Hey, forgot I have 5 I am selling.
Brian

A small Wilton in the car trailer, A 5" Cman on the work bench, a larger Balco on a stand, a Pony woodworkers vise on the work table and two drill press vises.

Six.

You know, I think I can edit that poll and open it back up. :dunno:

Re: How many vises do you own?

Can you make it so there is a second new poll?

I don't think so. Looking at the edit options, I think I can change the day count after the original date to close the poll. After a little math (days/year x #years) I think the poll would reopen.

I've never do it before so I'm not sure it would work.

EDIT: There is also an option to reset the fields.
