Sorry you didn’t get all your vises counted. I can’t edit poll results but I’d say close enough is good. Perfect accuracy for every entry is not required. I hope guys don’t exaggerate on purpose but there’s no way to monitor that. Plus, as the numbers get bigger, I’d bet that most guys have lost track of the exact number they have. Unless they are all lined up neatly in one or two places, it’s too hard to count.

Yes, as described in post #1 of this poll, workmates and drill press vises certainly count!

We were supposed to read post #1 before voting? ****! ;-)

You can add another percent to the at least 10 vises cause that's where I'm at.

Thanks for doing the survey. Fun stuff seeing the numbers and hearing what people have got.

More than I care to admit. I have given them away for presents, traded them for welding services, etc. Somehow they keep finding me.

Let's see...

5 Wiltons: C1, 9300, no. 4, a 6" and 8" imported

2 Parkers: 973 1/2 and a 273 swivel jaw

1 Columbian: 604 that's missing the swivel base

1 Morgan: Star model 4 1/2

1 no name:. No. 5177 made in Japan. 4" jaw I have mounted to a brake rotor

Couple of clamp on vises and a drill press vise

3/4 of a Columbian blacksmith post vise that is missing the screwbox and leadscrew.

Total: 13 3/4

Gave the Columbian 503 in my avatar to my boss and a Prentiss 254 to my uncle

Thanks for chiming in. When you say you might have a problem with 8 do you mean you have too many or too FEW! :)

Before I joined GJ, I only had 2
Now my collection is approaching triple digits.

Adding the drill press, milling and pipe vises put me at 12 - and that's after giving away my old "big blue" from China. After finally mounting the big wilton to a bench, that hunk of scrap iron never got used...

I felt almost bad when I sat and counted mine. I was figuring eight or so. I count at least twelve so far! Not so many by the standards here. Last year at this time I think I had maybe three.

As of now, it seems that only about 10% of us have more than 25 vises.

Not many of the regulars on the vise “megathread” have posted comments, (those who did...Thank you) but I bet that many more of them have entered the numbers for the poll. We can all speculate about the identity of the respondent who put himself into the “over 200” category.

Well, I'm in the 100 plus camp and voted that way. Then as I was thinking about it with mill and drill press vises added in, I may be up to the 150 level, probably don't want to know. :shocking:

It's hard to find the big American vises up here. Used Record are fairly common. I have one 6"and three 4". I also have a 5" and 4" Gray Canada and one 6" probably from china.

Oh heck, I didn't even count the woodworking, drill press, and mill vises...

Shift: i'm not sure you had all the over 100 vises options last time as you do hear so I didn't really feel compelled to even count mine and took a good WAG guess.

ALL: that said i haven't posted my # yet and while it might be less this year than last cause i started getting a lot more picky and letting more than a few find homes at member's homes it should be a fun exercise.

while I heard one member counting his 46,000 chickens 2 at a time I suppose I can count maybe 50 or a hundred or two or so vises by ones. I have a couple workmates and honestly I could easily let them go cause I rarely if ever use them or ever will cause I like my sawhorses. I might not ever use some of my vises, but they don't take up the space and I like looking at them more.

Thank you guys for your participation and the kind words.

Drives: I refined the ranges for the 2018 version of my poll. If you want to compare, here is a screenshot of the final results of the 2015 poll.

Regarding counting...My cousin has a small herd of cattle. When I asked him once how many he had he said that’s easy to figure...just count the hooves and divide by 4.

gman007:
Somehow I don’t believe that you have only one. :)

I've added a few since and count 26 in my head.
15 bench vises
6 drill press
2 pipe
2 mini (at least)
1 post
Oh yeah, 1 wood work so I have at least 27.

I don't consider myself a collector. It's not uncommon for me to have 3 or 4 in use at once during a project but then yeah, I have ended up thinking I should try to get one of each size of Record Mechanic's vices so I have 7 and am missing a #1 (I foolishly sold mine by mistake when I was getting rid of duplicates), a #7 and a #8 also missing. The other Mechanic's or bench vises are ones I want to try out for 6 months or so to get a feel for them and decide which ones I really should keep.

Drill press vises are the other type I have a few of. The main one is a quick change then 2 with adjustable angle jaws (one has 4 jaws), a cross slide and 2 normal that I don't use.

I have 4 vises, all US made... A smaller Littlestown that was my first vise, so I kept it, but it just sits on a shelf. I also have 3 Wiltons.

ALL: well I own 2 less today than yesterday cause as i'm pulling vises from the corners to make this count I'm figuring out homes for them cause some of these I don't need or care to store anymore. I let a Morgan 88 go to a preacher that I see at some auctions and since he paid my asking price on that one i gave him a 3.5 inch Eron that I think was made in England before they moved their factory to Taiwan or Japan or China.

maybe this counting vises thing might help my ORGANIZING?

Not really, I've had and sold a few too. I just happen to find most Prentiss in very good shape. If I didn't have my Morgan 150, one of my 526s Prentiss would be my main user. My real soft spot is Rock island.

Percentages are shifting a bit. Earlier there was about 10% of us with more than 25 vises. As of now it’s down to 8%
Probably a result of more of the “normal” tool loving guys chiming in compared to the early contributions of us vise nuts.

Three years ago the categories were not exactly the same but for comparison ; back then 8% of the respondents admitted to having over 30. But as of now, only half as many people have entered their number into the poll.

How does that compare to the prior poll?

Sorry Outlaw I don’t have records of the 2015 poll except for the final results. I changed the category amounts on purpose for 2018 in order to get some detail of the big collections compared to the old category of “over 100”.

Everybody else:
Thanks for entering your totals and especially to those who took a minute to post some detail of your pile, your bunch, your collection, or your hoard. :)

I have 7, all in regular usage. Two bench vises, one woodworking vise, one mill vise, and three sizes of precision grinding vises. I can't imagine needing any more, but if the right antique came along, I'd buy it 'just because'.

ALL: I haven't voted yet and still looking around and counting. I like that some of you are mentioning not only how many, but which vises you own.

i'm hoping to find new homes for most of mine that i'm pulling out from the corners and cabinets so this is a good drill so my bride doesn't have to do it after I leave GJ and this world. Maybe i'll get to see the 695 pound RR vise that is probably waiting for me in my next life.

VA has the salesman's sample which is really cool and worth maybe a dozen golden monkeys.

I think a pertinent question to add to this poll is "How long have you been collecting vises?"

I had one working shop vise a Yost cast steel (Taiwan) for 30 years my daily go to.

Was only after first scoring an Athol 613-1/2 at a flea mkt in late 2015 I got interested in old vises, and then was directed over to this Gin Joint ;) in late 2016 after I picking a very small but very interesting vise of unknown origin at least to me where within hours of joining and posting someone (member bl00) deemed it to be a Miller's Falls and even had old catalog pictures to post. :D Many thanks dude!

So I have 14 vises including the import Yost, a Reed 403, two Athols the 613-1/2 & a 90, two Littlestown vises, a model 400 stamped NY, NY and a 140 with pipe jaws, a Starret Athol 923 no swivel base, a Milwaukee 808 (way cool) several Craftsmans (mostly because I've generally been a C-Man tool fan over my lifetime), two different 801's, a big Jap 391, and late USA built 3 1/2, also a baby Columbian 031/2, along with the little 2" jaw Miller's Falls.

And the majority off them acquired just over this past summer and the market season before (2017).

Couldn't even imagine what I might end up with if I get a decade or more of collecting under my belt. :lol_hitti

Until I joined GJ in 2014 I owned 2 vises, a 3 1/2 inch Japanese made Craftsman and a 4 inch Wilton mechanics vise.
When I ran the 2015 version of this poll, I had about 10.

Today I have close to 80.
