Just following the "show us your vises thread", can't help but think that this site is a major cause of the escalating prices for vises. So I got to wondering who is hoarding a mother load of vises on here?

I my self have 4.

Just curious but do you also count woodworking vises or is it just mechanic/pipe vises?
Because I have two large woodworking vises and I don't know if they also count.

Two.

A 3.5" Littletown that was either left in the basement by the previous home owner or it was my dad's. Not sure which it is. A 6" Babco I bought from craigslist a couple months ago. Made in China unfortunately, but I didn't ask/check so my mistake. It is a rather hefty vise, probably 50lbs or so.

I'd like to pickup a nice Columbian or Yost at some point to replace the Babco though.

You sure about that Babco being Chinese? The company was based in Oakland but the vises were made in japan.

Yep, has Made in China stamped on the swivel base and Made in China embossed on the body. It is a rather solid vise though.

I counted 8 in my head, but that includes 4 vise not mounted that I don't see ever being mounted. These where my first vises, matching 3.5" and 4.5" littletowns, a littletown pipe vise and an post leg.

I have 8 at the moment. 3 of them weigh less than 5 pounds, 2 are vacuum base for hobbies, and 2 are small 3 1/2" jaws for the garage. One good big old one at my shop.

That's not counting machine vises. I think I have about 6 more of those.

I keep looking for the big old iron, but bigcaddy and outlaw buy them all!

zuk

oh, forgot the record woodworking vise.

I have more than 10 vises, but it is hard to keep track. :headscrat They are spread out over several workshop areas and vehicles. Even some in storage.

Machine Shed: 6" China, 4" Columbian D44-M3
Workshop: 5" Columbian 3050, 4" Parker non-swivel
New shop: 6" China rotating/swivel, 4-1/2" Parker on welding table
Shop trucks: 2 6" Harbor Freight China vises, 1 small table vise on a 2" stinger
Pipe vises: Rigid 3" Bench mount, Rigid chain Tri-Stand
Collectors: Cheney Vise/Anvil, Versa-Vice (New in Box)
Drill press: 1 Wilton 4" tilting, 1 China 6" tilting
Milling Machine: 1 4" Taiwan, 1 8" USA, 1 Jet dividing head
A couple of small table top vises, one is a vacuum mount.

I'm looking for a 6"+ American-made vise, but the collectors around here have bid up the prices beyond what I can afford.

I was only considering bench vises as they seem to be skyrocketing in price for vintage models

I noticed on ebay the vise prices are going higher and higher. I saw one of those small 3.5" Craftsman ones go for over $100 before shipping. Completely blew me away. Back last year that was a $30 vise.

I posted 10 or more, not sure how many, but not a single bench mount (yet). Probably pushing 20 if you count printed circuit specialty vices. Most are machinist 3 & 4 inch vises, but includes pin vice and hand vice also, as well as a ring vice. :dunno:

I can't really say how many vises I have. My wife could join this group and find out. It is best that I don't look in her shoe closet and she doesn't count the vises.

If it's only "Bench vises", then 14 full up machinist's Vises, and 10 Garage/Homeowners Vises, (exposed screw, lighter weight etc...) Counting every type of vise, DP mill, hand, wood, etc... more than 2X that number.

Got a model 40 made in Japan. It is good for removing fixed bottom bracket bearing cups on bicycles, which is a tough job to complete without wrecking the tool, cup or bike bottom bracket. You get one (1) chance to get it done right. The jaws fit real flush. I have a chance to post a picture, tomorrow.
I use it exclusively for that job. I think it was pretty cheap in price, but it has held up. I think my count is 23 vises, including woodworking (5) and pipe vises (2).
starting line-up:
1.Wilton 1645 on bench; workhorse
2. Craftsman (Columbian) 10 inch woodworking; a heavy dog!
3. Herriman 8 inch ww with bench-dog on bench; smooth operating
4. Prentise 156 for springing cotter pins off the old cottered cranks
5. Babco 40; exclusively for BB cup removal since jaws must have no dings
6. a "no name" Taiwan 4 incher for light work; really a good vise for under $20 (1980's)
7. Palmgren adjustable angle drill press vise
8. Wilton "baby bullet" for hobby work; model boats, etc.
9. Reed 204 1/2; the "boss"

The others are making up the rest of the herd.

Yes, the Babco vises made in Japan were pretty decent small vises. Our local Ace Hardware sold them years ago, and I've had one on a semi-portable workbench for about 15 years. I had no idea Babco was still around and being made in china now.

Just counting bench vises of 3-1/2" jaw width or wider, I've got 11. That's the number I voted with in the poll. 6 of the 11 are mounted on benches and in use.

1 Babco
1 Columbian
2 Morgan
1 Oswego
2 Prentiss
1 Rock Island
3 Wilton

Wow, voted and then realized I have more than I said.

2 WIlton 400's
1 baby bullet wilton
1 wilton wood working vice
1 small vise
3 rigid pipe vises
1 rigid drill press vise
1 craftsman drill press vise
1 shop made drill press vise and various small holders to hold while using drill press vices.

I am probably forgetting something. I do have a panavise and an other soldering vice

I have no real need for one and I work in my garage a lot.

There are a few things that one might help with, but not enough so to buy one yet.

How would you expect someone with between 2-5 vises to vote in your poll? :dunno:

Regardless, I have five.

i think he accidentally used the wrong symbol. i saw that, and votes the second choice, thinking he meant less than 5 but more than 1... i mix the symbols up too.

Geez.. I hope my wife doesn't see this.

When I voted, I put down >10, but now that I'm thinking about it, with the bench, woodworking, milling/drilling, blacksmith, pipe, jeweler, could easily be >20. But that's only until the next good deal comes along.
