If I had to worry about people breaking into my **** I would Move to a better area. I can leave my 18ft garage door up and go up the road for a coffee and come back in 15 min and no one is ever gonna touch my stuff. i also have 4 windows. I had a garage with no windows in Norfolk at a house I was renting, Man I hated it, Felt like I was in Jail.

Actually,if I lived in town ,I wouldnt worry about it. Where I'm at,my driveway is .4 mile long, and when we are gone, theres no one within a half mile in any direction. We also have more than our share of mutant not-rights here in the nw lower of mi.The joke around here is that trbo (me) has a .45 smith and a back hoe,and nobody would know if he used either one!Seriously though,Ive got a pretty high profile and people know whats in my building and where its at,so whatever I can do to make it harder,I will. The shop in ohio was in a rural nieghborhood and we never locked it up,and never were invaded in almost 40 yrs.,but up here is different.

Originally I didn't want any windows, but after much thought and debate I opted to put one 39"x40" unit in the wall overlooking the yard. It will be right above my workbench when I'm finished with the garage build.

It's not so much the area, it's the lowlifes in the area, with unemployment at almost 11% and herion use on the rise, they will break in anywhere. Some of the local LEO have had their stuff broken into and stolen.

Not having any windows does two things, keeps prying eyes out and they can't tell if anybody is working in the garage. Leaving a radio on also helps with the latter.

I have five of these narrow windows in my shop:

They are only 16" wide overall, with a 13.5" window opening.

I'll be putting a steel bar down the middle of the window frame, making it impossible for a human to get in even if they broke out the windows.
The windows do give me good cross-ventilation and light.

never say never! we took out the boarded windows out of my dads garage and put in glass block with the little opening windows the size of 1 X 2 blocks. never imagined anyone could get in. only took 2 weeks and some a-hole popped the window and stole a bunch of stuff. still don't know how they fit in or out. these are the window

I have two large windows in mine.

But they are on the back wall, WELL out of reach by anyone trying to gain access or sneak a peek

From the outside (during paint)

And the view they provide :bounce:

Dang, if I had such a goreous view of the palouse out of my garage like that I'd probably open the whole wall with floor-to-ceiling store front windows (and drapes or something to close for privacy when warranted). Nice territorial view.

It seems this whole issue greatly depends on where each of us lives. In higher theft areas I can see where windows would be more of a liability. But I had the idea of having to live in a cave or box because a bunch of a-holes never got some basic concepts from kindergarten to leave other people's stuff alone. I'd go ahead and put in the windows but do like Steevo did with narrower opennings or like HemiRambler with his very creative security-bars-that-don't-look-like-prison-bars.

Mounting windows up hire as clerestory windows would also help. Say with 7 ft+ window sills so it's harder for people to look in as well as get in. Not impossible, sure but harder.

Anyways, I don't like the idea of a dark cave and would try to figure out ways of getting natural light into the shop area.

I have 1 window in the shop bathroom. If I was building the shop the only windows would be Windows XP on the shop computer. Of course I am strange I don't even like windows on a house.

I got one 4'x2' along with windows built into the doors (not the garage door but a service door). I hate having them because you can see way too much. the 4'x2' you can't see into from the outside but the thing has a plastic lock on it, it would be insanly easy to break into so i keep telling my parents we need to do something different, like maybe put up 2 metal bars across it.

I have 2 and I don't really like them. They are 3x5, same as the house, but the design of the house has the windows ~24" off the ground.

Had I designed the place, I would have used a 4ft tall window and raised it to around 48" off the ground.

Would make furniture placement much easier, as well as not having to block the windows in the garage.

Hoopty388,

I really like those 16 inch windows that open! Thanks for the idea, I plan on adding that type of design to my future shop on both sides.

They will fit pretty well right between the framing, and if I space them every 8 or 10 feet, that is perfect for benches and cupboards in between.

Thanks

Ryan

I have three, plus opaques at the top of my garage doors and a skylight. The garage doors are the only ones visible from the front. One 3x5 on the side wall and a 2x3 in the bathroom. I have another 3x5 in the second floor "storage" area with a skylight. I love the natural light. I rarely turn on a light during the day. As far as privacy and security, I have blinds on the three regular windows and the garage is connected a monitored alarm system.

None..........closed up the two in the back wall when re-siding, closed up the man door also. Just feel better with things that way, even though, like some others I could go down around the corner to Tim Horton's for 15 and nothing would happen. More security too when you are away. Shut off the power then too, to keep any thing funny happening with the main door.

I have 2 windows and they have mini blinds on them I never open them cause I usually just open the overhead door. The windows do make the outside of the building look better and they have a good 4 feet from the stool to the floor so there's plenty of wall space. I do close it at night but the only intruders we have had around here have been skunks and chipmunks. Even though we are in MA it's pretty nice around here and not too many folks lock stuff up. I am wondering how many of the security issues mentioned are real vs percieved. My guess is that 80-90% of it is imagined. In reality, you will find that no one really gives a rip about you or your collection of stuff.

if you live in a rough area you can weld a piece of rebar to 2 washer and mount it horizontal and the window will still open. but don't say no one will ever get in here lol

[/IMG]None as well...jury still out when working in the winter with overhead door closed...feels a little weird, not being able to see out, but I do feel more secure. If I ever get my mezzanines done, I plan on some windows high up on the walls on the second floor.

Four, two on each side. One window on each side opens for cross ventilation. Thermopane. You can see right in, but, it's not a problem where I live. I haven't put shades.

Add another 'NONE' to the fire. Same reasons; Not willing to give up wall space or let the bad guys look inside for shopping. Never put any decorations on the outside for the same reason. Don't want to say, "Hey lookee here, good stuff inside."

Might put some windows on the next garage, though. I REALLY like Roger55's gas station build.

I have about 2,000 windows in my barn unfortunately they are all about ¼+” x 10-20” long and have no glass in them.
I had one large 42” x 80” window but some white trash hunter took it out with a .22 while I was gone a couple years back.
