how many zones

Hi new to the journal here. I am starting to build a 28x32 garage with an attached12x10 breeze way. I'm going with in floor heat in both. I want to have my boiler and manifold in my basement. My question is how many zones should I use and dia of pex. 4" floor thickness.

When I did the same thing, I ended up going with 3 zones.

1. Garage.
2. Bonus room above garage.
3. Breezeway.

If you don't have livable space above the garage, then I'd suggest 2.

Question for you: Is the floor in your breezeway have a concrete floor like your garage?

Do you really mean loops? Zones are separately controlled heating areas, each typically with its own thermostat. If you meant zones, then you would certainly want separate zones for the indoor space and the outdoor space so 2.

With the garage loops, you will want to use half inch pex and limit the length to 300'. 900 SF so you want 3-300' loops and space the pipes 12" apart in the garage. The breezeway is an odd duck, not sure why you would want to heat the outdoor space so I can't help you lay that floor out.

why only 1/2" pex. Idk if it was on here or hydronic site but they swore up and down 3/4 or I believe what they called 7/8 was a lot better and you use quite a bit less overall for a 1000 sq ft. Plus you get 16" spacing between lines instead of 12".

Anything other than 1/2" is oddball. It will of course work but it is not standard and you will be unable to build based on the vast experience of those that used the regular 1/2" stuff.

Where do you live? I would have 4 loops in two zones. A separate loop/zone for the breezeway and a zone with three loops in the garage proper. 1/2" pex spaced one foot on center. Easy to calculate the linear feet required this way. 1ft/sq ft of space.
