I have been planning to build a shop on my farm around a pair of overhead cranes and deep enough for a semi plus mezzanine. It will come in at 50 x 100 as a result and will be either 20 or 24' walls. There are three air handling units and 10 ton Daikin compressor/condensers of recent vintage coming up at a sale tomorrow (27th). In our climate, I can easily cool my 1,000 sq. ft. shop with a 2 ton unit but am I going overkill assuming 10x the volume needs 10x the cooling? (i.e. 2 units)

It's about a ton per 5-600 sqft. Since you're only about 6 feet tall, you'll only need to cool the bottom 7-8 feet, so one unit should do it.

Bring a semi into shop 90° outside truck is 90° + whole drive train, brakes and tires. Would talk to big *** fans for their recommendation for fans.
Just cooling. Heat will be from a pair of IR tubes along each side of shop (and probably a small forced air unit for mezzanine). Insulation will be 24" of 90%+ air foamed concrete on the walls, 6" polyisocyanurate MIPs (will do 8" if any of the refrigeration panels could work) on roof and bifold (hangar) door on south end. Windows will all be in top half of door on South side (with insulated covers for overnight in winter). Intent is to be as energy efficient as possible. Set of large ceiling fans (peaked low slope roof) down the middle. A/C will use one set of ductwork along East wall from utility building tower that will hold compressors, air tanks, drying systems and possible used oil aux heater.
I bought just one compressor/condenser and one air handling unit. Door will not be opened on really hot or really cold days unless emergency work. Door will be HUGE (20 x 40) and no big hurry for recovery after opening. Most airflow will be from makeup air from welding fume extraction.
Munzungu: my IR heaters (have all burners and 1/2 the tubes now) were made in Calgary.

One would think that if someone is building a shop that must certainly cost a couple of hundred grand to build, then getting an actual load calculation and HVAC plan should be relative peanuts...

Until design is in final form on paper, hard to do (still experimenting with the wall material design to optimize matrix strength). Auction with a/c and air handling unit only showed up one day before bidding, so not a lot of time to do the required work. Went overkill on the heating side as I need to be concerned about recovery in winter (I have similar insulation values on smaller shop now).
