The two big differences are:
1) Home heating oil is not subject to state/federal road taxes, usually making it cheaper than diesel. This is why they dye it red, so you don't just put it in your truck.
2) About ~15 years ago, Diesel fuel in the U.S. switched to "Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel", and Home Heating Oil did not immediately switch over. However I believe most home heating oil is now ultra low sulfur.

But because of the tax thing, home heating oil is typically 30-40 cents cheaper per gallon compared to diesel. If you're paying significantly more money for heating oil than the current road diesel price at the pump - your supplier is robbing you.

This is going to vary by jurisdiction. We pay most of the tax on heating fuel too, to "align with emissions policies".

The trucking cost to deliver the fuel to your home gets added to the per Litre (or gallon) rate so the price is usually more than road diesel. Same idea for marine fuel and remote locations... more overhead and delivery costs - higher prices.

You're getting ripped off, chief. Heating oil should be $0.30-0.50 cheaper than diesel, not the other way around.
We don’t know enough info to say. The Co-op give 20 cents off of the tank is keep full vs will call and charges 20 cents more if it’s a will call under 200 gallons.

So it can be 40 cents more expensive depending on how they order it.

Quick Google search shows a diesel cost in Olympia WA at $4.55-$4.69 per gallon. Chart above shows $ 0.494 cents per gallon for taxes. But, delivery may add a little cost. So, seems to be a little high to me. I did a search for home heating oil prices and it's pretty hard to find prices on suppliers in the area. Guess you should call around unless you are locked into one supplier.

$3.99 two weeks ago in the Northeast. When I get some cash in my pocket the oil man comes.
I had hoped for better since gasoline was under $3.00 at the time (and still) but I guess they get what they can.

After our former oil supplier let us run out of oil about 4 years ago, I installed a wifi oil gauge that works amazingly well, tracking our usage hourly and notifying me at configurable points (like 1/2 full, 1/4 tank, etc.) It also can show you prices for oil from several suppliers in your area.

I have one on my fuel tank. It goes wacky when it gets cold, so pretty much useless in winter 🤣

What's it cost? We use SkyBitz at work and it's something like $350 a year per monitor. Some sites have 6 or 7 tanks.

Heating oil is not delivered by the heating oil fairy. It cost money to to pay a hazmat driver drive around to an ever decreasing customer base, dragging that hose to deliver the 150 gallon minimum.

We paid $3.40 about a month and a half ago, which was about the same as last year.

It’s not like it’s the end of December, so there’s probably not much of a price war going on for the few companies that still do it

I think they are 250 to purchase but I am pretty sure they don’t have a yearly fee. The westroc/ anova monitors cost 5 cents a read.

We don’t charge the customer for them

They must, can't imagine the outfit making them is paying for the cell usage.

I don’t handle invoices? Just ordering and warranty returns.

They are a 100 times better user interface than westroc. Very powerful and very few issues.

It’s easy for the customer to use as well if you want to let them do so.

This page says 3$ a month? I wonder if we pay up front for so many years on them?

I still have one of these on my basement tank.

il_680x540.4759906746_i8ah.jpg

Usually pretty accurate, but ended up with an overfill this time. Maybe something is getting gummy inside or a problem with the float.

If I upgrade, any reason a simple one like this won't work?

I might have **** in mine too. I depleted mine completely, added about 12 gallons to survive 2 days, and my delivery only stuffed 257 gallons in it.

I just have a float sticking out of the top though so I don't really know how accurate it is other than flat on the bottom is empty.
