how much did your paint cost

I just got my paint for the interior of my 30 x 40.
I went to Sherwin Williams and got about 30 gallons of primer and top coat.
It ran about $25 a gallon. They claimed I got "contractor price".
The person that gave me the quote told me it was counter price. When I questioned them on the quote price and the contractor price being the same they back peddled and said the quote was contractor price also. Something sounds fishy. To much tap dancing and computer work.
I just don't know or can tell what "counter price"is suppose to be. It just around here alot of businesses have reputations for flim flamming the end user / homeowner.

Should have just bought 5 gallon containers at HomeDepot or Lowes and used every conceivable discount. I'd bet you'd end up under $20/gal.

However, can't beat Sherman Williams quality so you get what you pay for.

What were you quoted a gallon ?

If you were quoted $25/gallon and were happy enough to pay that for it, I'm not sure why you would complain.

Who was "they" ? Maybe they were mistaken and thought that you got a contractor price since you were buying 30 gallons of paint ?

Sounds to me like you paid full retail, hopefully you got the top of the line paint with the "smell good" stuff mixed in, and even then its still definitely not a deal. Also sounds to me like you got a crapload of paint. FWIW, I used maybe 10 gallons of paint to paint every bit of the interior of my 1400 sq foot house, and its got a lot of interior wall + ceiling space. Hope when you said you bought 30 gallons you just fat-fingered it and really meant 10.

What line of paint did you get? sherwin williams has contractor paint to really expensive paint. 25 a gallon for interior pro mar 400 or contractor satin is about right. step up to super paint or emerald, and your well over 40 a gallon and almost 70 for the emerald at retail. contractor price at sherwin williams depends on the contractor buying it and the manager. Generally depends on volume or how well the manager likes you. and it isn't a set across the board rate on all products.

Is there a way to put a 'value' on these paints? Say, the SW 'contractor' grade paint is worth $20 a gallon. What does it take to get the same quality from one of the department store paints (Walmart, Home Depot, etc.)?? What about the higher quality paints?

I got advice from a painter contractor (long time friend) and backed those numbers with online calculators as well as the stores figures.
My friend schooled me with a little of his knowledge and told me with "new" material,use coverage of 250 sq ft per gallon. I have 1650 sq ft of OSB and 1825 sqft of drywall / ceiling. So I bought 7gal. latex primer (dry wall primer sealer), 7 gallon of oil base primer (OSB, Acrylic-Alkyd Primer ) and 14 gallon top coat (surescrub). What I don't use I can return.
As far as buying Lowe's or Menard's, I searched this site and found that Sherwin Willams was recommended highly. Also the first product mentioned by my friend was Sherwin Williams.

+1 for Sherwin Williams, I have used other brands and won't say non of them are any good but I have had bad luck with the others. Sherwin covers way better and holds up better then anything else I have used. The most important reason to go to Sherwin however is the experiance of their guys to the box stores. Sherwin does excellent work matching paint often you can use it for touch ups and even at different angles you still can't tell the touch up ever happened, try that with box store inconsistancy.

It worked great for me. I built my garage 9 years ago. I picked up Menards cheap oil based primer for the base coat, and their cheap gloss white latex for top coat. It still looks great today.

I have used their high end "smell good" paint a couple times and thought it sucked.
I have used their regular high end paint and it didn't cover for ****.

Their middle and low end worked fine though..

I'm not much of a fan of this paint in primer in one stuff. I just would rather have a primer tinted if necessary and top coat it. Most primers are still cheaper then regular paint.
If I was doing a small project and one gallon was more than enough to cover, then I would consider buying the paint/primer mix instead of buying a gallon of primer and a gallon of top coat.


About the $25 a gallon.... seems fair price to me, unless it was their low end paint.

I just found out my "oil based primer" is really water based with an emusified oil. That was going to be for the OSB. I'm sure that if SW spec'd it it should be ok. But I don't know, I am not a painting expert, Just more confused by the day.
if I were to consider another brand, what would be recommended? I can return this stuff anytime. I here Kilz primer thrown around alot for the OSB. Anything in particular for dry wall primer and top coat? Menard's. Howe Depot, Lowe's, Farm fleet? All interior grade or mix interior and exterior or all exterior grade?
I read somewhere that if the interior temperature gets low (45º~ winters) that an exterior grade will last / look better longer and help keep moisture / condensation problems to a minimum (especially the drywall). Myth or factual?
Thanks for the help so far. I just want to get a nice paint job done before the cold gets here.

Totally understandable, but camera isn't exactly "new" and it doesn't match correctly a large portion of the time... it gives you the colors that make up the paint and it gets close most of the time with the ratios, but just like when mixing automotive paint even if using a factory code or a camera a good paint guy can tint it and get that perfect match. Glad you have had good luck though some colors can be a real chore to match....

We always primed wood with Zinsser Cover-Stain. Definitely oil based, easy and covers great. Around here you can pick it up from $21-$29 per gallon depending on where you get it. Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware, Sherwin Williams, etc all sell it. Only draw back I know of with it is the smell.

I just (this week) primed a 30x30 with 10' OSB walls with Cover-Stain and it took about 3-1/2 gallons for the walls. Make sure to use a thick nap roller (1/2" is fine) on the OSB or you will drive yourself crazy trying to get it covered.

Last month I completed painting the entire interior of my garage 30x36x14.5. Id say about 15hrs total using an airless paint sprayer. I used an exterior metal roof paint from Lowes - BlackJack roofgaurd 7000 in white $75 per 5gal bucket. It is an elostomeric paint so supposed to stretch and give a bit with the hot and cold. Plus I'm not turning my garage in to a show garage, more so for little duty hobbiest - meaning it's not insulated. I believe I used about ten - 5 gallon pails to cover everything on the inside. I had purlins and girts exposed unlike those homeowners with flush facing walls. The wood did **** some paint though, typically they needed 2-3 sprays before I finally stopped seeing the wood grain.

I'd highly recommend a sprayer if your on the fence.. so much quicker for a job of this size, plus I could get into cracks that would be hard and tedious with a brush or roller.

I got lucky at Lowes they were doing one of their clerance sweeps and were clearing 5 gall pails of white for $10. I asked why and they said they were bringing in a different brand or the MFG had changed something and they need to cler them out for the new ones coming in.

I've had good luck using Kilz oil-based primer on OSB. 2 coats and it's ready for top coat. I top coated mine with their Pro-X 170 latex.

The only issue I had was not top coating it. I thought it looked good enough to leave alone, till I realized that it turned yellowish (think a smoker's house). It was my mistake and I learned from it.
