How much should I expect to pay for the power co. to install a meter in my new garage? The box is there along with the pole going to the roof. Nothing has been run from the street yet of course..

I've put a call into the power co and they are supposed to have somoene call back in the next week. Trying to prepare myself for the worst.

Or do power companies issue a meter as it is their equipment?

Somewhere between free and $10,000.

Seriously, there's no way for us to even make a guess. It will depend on the particular utility (every one has different regulations), and it will depend on the conditions - how far they have to run the wire, the size of the service, is it overhead or underground, etc.

About a month ago I had a 200 amp underground service activated. The power company charged just under $1000. For that, they provided about 150 feet of 350 MCM aluminum feeder wires, a meter, connectors to my existing transformer, foam to fill the top of the plastic conduit, two "call before digging" stickers, and labor. I had to have the trench dug, the meter base installed, conduit run from the meter base to the pole, and the conduit securely anchored to the pole.

This installation was in northwest Washington state. The power company here installs the wire from the transformer to their side of the meter base, and the meter. We are not allowed to have it done by someone else. My electricians told me that they would have charged me about $700 to do the same work.

The main variable on your charges will be the wire. How big and how far?

My new connection was free. Nearest power to me was 600' I think they set 4 power poles the transformer and connected into my meter can. But that was 7 years ago.

A meter is a PoCo's cash register they furnish it & install it, the charges will vary by company some are reasonable others like PG&E will not even give you the option of Vaseline.

Im sure they will not charge for the meter, just running the line. Here, they charge 2.50/ft for underground service entry from nearest pole. Overhead is free. This is because they contract out the underground placement.
