I have almost exclusively Snap-on tools with some Mac tools in my garage. I have every socket (SAE/Metric deep, shallow, impact and specialty), wrench (open end ratcheting, stubby, etc), pliers and screwdriver I could ever use in my home shop, plus duplicates (the Snap-on battery pliers are too cool to own just one pair),
I only buy used and I prefer to buy in bulk. I sell most of my duplicates, have great patience and not only have $0 invested in my tool collection, I have $0 in my Snap On boxes as well.
I don't mean to sound like I am bragging--I just want to encourage the home user to build a collection slowly and buy used...the hunt for tools is enjoyable--just like a treasure hunt. The only down side is I have lots of extra tools of all brands that I end up with and have to get rid of. I tend to just put grab bag boxes of bulk tools on CL or build free tool bags for younger guys who like cars but do not have decent tools. Lots of guys buy the grab bags and free up my space.
I understand this is not an option for those that use the tools for their profession. I also understand that Snap On is overkill for the home garage. For me, it was the challenge of building such a tool collection for $0. I have spent lot of time doing this over the past 18 months, but I enjoyed the hunt. I have $0 in it but hundreds of hours. It was fun and satisfying.
