On the fence about a heater for my garage this winter. I would like to go with a Modine but don't have a lot to spend on this so I was also thinking about just going with a portable propane unit for now. Besides the price of the unit, what do you think the cost will be to have a pro run a NG line to the garage and install the vent. The garage is a 2 car attached approx 22x22 with 14' ceilings. The closest gas line is in the basement approx 15' away. Any experiences or opionions would help me decide.

Thanks

I sold my ceiling mount unit heater (modine-style) to a guy who runs an indoor archery range. The local heating guy charged him $250.00 to install the unit and hook up the gas and install the vent.

Some units can use a wall vent which is a no-brainer for the do-it-yourselfer.

I switched to a gas-fired infra-red tube heater...cheaper to run...quieter...no blast of air in your face. Your high ceiling is just right for one of these.

A better heater IMHO.

good luck.

vented heater

I used a 30,000 btu 'salamander' type heater with 20 lbs propane tanks at my old garage for years. Decent heat but the fumes were terrible. I couldn't take it for more than 2 hours even with a window cracked. My builder charged me $100 to run a 50 ft line to my attached garage at my new place. Do yourself a favor,go with a vented natural gas (or propane) heater of some sort. I have a Modine HD75 and I am extremely pleased with it. It actually is pretty quiet. The whole install including the unit itself was $1500.

I agree with DaveL.. I purchased and installed a 75,000 BTU Hamilton garage furnace from Carter Lumber (same design as Modine) a few months ago. I love it. Heats my new 32' x 28' unattached gargare very easlily. I have 30,000 BTU unvented wall mounted heater in my 22' x 26' attached garage and it does alright, but it takes a while to warm it up.

Thanks guys, I will call a contractor when I'm ready to do this but just wanted to get an idea of the install cost. I'll make a decision within a couple weeks. I might just go with the port propane for this year since the car will be having some major work done most of the winter and will be at my buddies shop....
