How much paint for garage?

I know this has been asked before, but I can't get a good answer. How much paint do I need for the interior of an approximately 20x22 garage with about a 10ft ceiling? This has never been painted and the drywall will be skim coated and primed. There is a double garage door on one wall, two man doors, and a double window. Also, how much paint for the ceiling?

I just painted the exterior of a 28x24 with a sprayer. I used all 5 gallons. For just the ceiling area I would say 3 gallons would be a safe bet.

About two gallons more than however much you buy. You might be able to stretch two coats on it all out of five gallons, but it would be a stretch. If you have some extra primer, put it on first. Spend the money on top grade paint, it'll save you a lot of time doing extra coats. My son got some white BEHR paint at HD and it took three coats to cover on walls that were already painted white. Ceiling paint is about the same as wall paint, just a little thicker viscosity so it clings better according to the guy at the paint store.

Do the math - find out what your square footage is. From what you said, your probably looking at about 700 sq feet to do the 3 walls and over the garage door (you didn't mention any other doors or windows)

Find out how much one gallon of the paint your going to buy will cover. For example, Sherwin Williams Super Paint will cover up to 400 sq ft per coat. So your roughly looking at 2 gallons per coat. Two coats would be 4 gallons total to do the walls

I just did my very similar sized garage (18x26' with 9' and 10' ceilings), bought one 5 gallon primer, one 5 gallon paint...one coat of primer, two of paints, still have a gallon or two left.

I didn't check the SW site listed above, but here's what I've done in the past, and it always works out for me. (Worked in a paint store and painted for a living for a few months in my youth.) Calculate the total square footage of what you're painting and divide by 300 for primer (lays a little thick) and 350 for top coats to figure out how many gallons you'll need. Each gallon will cover about that much unless you're really good at laying it on THIN, which I can't stand, because the lap marks show more.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to paint MY garage, but if I do that before finishing the interior, my wife will kill me.

I went through probably 6 gallons of paint on my 28x24 shop... would have been less had I not gotten "quik hide" **** first. Used the Valspar storm coat for walls and ceiling. Had plenty left over to paint the attached 10x20 when I converted it over for my wife to use as an art studio.

Prime first regardless. Spraying makes it go faster too. I prefer Bengamin Moore paint from Ace Hardware.

My 20X20 took just under 4 gallons. It was drywalled with no primer. 2 gallons primer, two semigloss paint.

Was thinking four gallons as well. I would also say pick up one of those 65$ 5 gallon buckets of primer and put on two or maybe even three coats of primer. If you are going with a white color or something similar to the primer you may be able to get by with 3 gallons, one good coat and one light touch up coat. I just did that on our house and painted the whole 3k SF and it saved a ton of $... also got 20% off and went with Behr premium plus 5 gallons for around 20$ a gallon...

This should be obvious but I didn't see it stated much here. It will depend on what kind of paint you're using as well. I went with the Behr premium ultra plus and found the coverage was great. For the walls only (not including ceiling) I used 3 gallons on a 20 x 30.

Assuming you're going to roll the paint...Depends on the color & quality of paint. Dark colors need 3 coats. Lighter, you can get away with one heavy coat after the walls are primed. I averaged 400 s.f. with primer. 250-300 s.f. with eggshell Benjamin Moore Aura.

I just painted my garage. It is similar in size. Some of the sheet rock was 14 years old, some was new. So I used a grey primer. ..5 gallons
Only half of the ceiling got paint about 3 gallons of flat white. 3 coats, wants another. Won't get it
Top half of the wall is simi gloss white. 3 gallons , three coats
Lower half a medium blue, only 1 gallon
It depends on the color of the primer and the final color. I used a dark primer then painted white.

Paint bucket should have coverage figures but those figures don't include material to be painted. Double it for unprimed material.
