How much run out is acceptable with a new drill?

Bought a new Bosch cordless drill. Still going through the honeymoon stage of ownership, but I feel pretty good about my choice all things considered.

One negative is that it seems like there is a lot of run out with the chuck. No one would accuse this drill of spinning a bit true. Curious how much run out one could or should expect from a cordless drill?

How much runout do you see? Have you measured it?

There is always run out with a drill. Then there is the drill bit itself plus the accuracy of its sharpening.

The more $ you spend the less run out there will be but frankly for drilling clearance holes, pilot holes etc. I have never had a problem. Note the run out often looks worse than it is because of the concentricity and writing on the outside of the chuck.

Before you do go on the witch hunt, make sure there is actual run out and not just visual. Sometimes drill bits can give an illusion of wobble, but there really is none. Grab a straight rod and chuck it up, this will give a pretty good indication of run out if there is any.

sometimes it´s only the sleeve of the chuck which wobbles but the chuck/drill bit itself is ok.

When you see it/feel it. Some of the Bosch models sold here have too much play.

If you can see the bit wobble like a mofo with a known good bit...then absolutely return it... MFG Defect.
But other then that, how can runout even be an issue with a hand held tool? I mean seriously the fact that you have to hold it in place, if you turn your head to see/hear what your wife is bitching about now will induce some slop in the hole being drilled.

Even with the most perfect, truest of the true hand held drills...holes wont be perfect because theres a guy holding the thing.

You want to drill perfect holes, get a Bridgeport and a full set of reamers.
