I have worn a hole in my floor from the pacing!!!!:willy_nil:lol_hitti I guess this is the definitive answer to my initial question....find a standup guy:bowdown: who is willing to help you out and find a nearly perfect rust free example in Arizona.Randy, I am simply speechless! I can't convey how much I appreciate you taking the time and helping a total stranger out with this "unicorn" hunt.:thumbup: Truck is really nice. Now I just have to get it home.

Mark, I feel honored to be able to help you find that Unicorn! As Robert once said "I would rather be Lucky than Good"

Lets hope it all works out and we can get it to my place on Tuesday as planned. I do have a receipt and bill of sale I will send you and I gave him what I had on me for a deposit. Seller was a great guy and out of the norm honest. He was supposed to remove it from CL but was up last I looked.

Again, It was nice visiting with you on phone and happy to help a fellow G-J member. R

This question is for MP&C and other experienced body guys.:dunno:I have a chance to aquire my "unicorn" vehicle...a 1977 Dodge Ramcharger poptop.:drool:Being it is the northeast, the lower body, rockers, ect. are very rusty. The frame and more importantly the top are solid.Front clip is good and truck is mostly complete. Some panels are available from LMC.These trucks are so rare and I really only want a 77-79 with 7" round headlights and the turn signals in the grille.I have a good welder and my skills are improving with practice.I have all the time in the world...money is the limiting factor. The internet is littered with "projects" where people over estimated their skills and ability.Any and all opinions are welcomed!:thumbup:

I just realized you started this thread a day after Christmas. Sorry it took until 4pm on Saturday to get that done for you! Ha~ha.

I see you have a new Avatar too!

There are those who think I should drive the unicorn home instead of having it shipped.I've thought about it.Here is the math.Flight is $280...10mpg(if I'm lucky) @ 2894 miles is around $700....3 hotel stays around $300 plus meals $60 comes to around $1340 plus tolls. And that's driving around 950 miles a day!Add in the fact that I hate to fly, wear and tear on the truck, potential breakdowns, ect. $1500 is a bargain. It would be quite an adventure or a total disaster. I will have it shipped.

Having done both the fix the rusty truck thing and the arrive and drive deal - you have made the right choices!

I'm in the middle of fixing the cab of a '92 Ford F250 - I bought all the repair panels I can for the truck and I'm still making parts. This for one of the most common trucks on the planet. Then I looked at car-part.com to find that undamaged cabs go for $600 at most down south... I should have went for a roadtrip this holiday instead of lying under the truck having rust rain down into my eyes.

Enjoy your Ramcharger!

$1500 seems steep. I just shipped two cars to Hawaii for $1400 a piece. $800 of that was for the boat ride.

I did a fly and drive when I bought my last work van. 38 hour drive time from Brandon, Manitoba to Nova Scotia. Cost a one way flight to Winnipeg, a 2 hour shuttle to Brandon, a motel on Friday night and 5 tanks of gas. Flew out on Friday morning and arrived home Sunday night. I really should have taken another day, because it was really pushing the safe limits of how long one should be behind the wheel. There is no way I would do it in a unknown 40 year old vehicle. When you factor in missed time at work, 1500.00 is a bargain.

I think that it is much cheaper to ship freight via ocean than by land.

Yes and no.

If you can manage economies of scale it is much cheaper to ship freight by sea. Unfortunately shipping cars to Hawaii I don't make the scale portion. There are only two companies that ferry car, and they have you over a barrel and know it.

Now from Norfolk, I can ship a 40' connex box to any port in the work for around 3k. I can get a lot of places cheaper. I saw Norfolk to Germany for as low as $100. There is so much excess capacity is ocean freight is a commodity. It often costs more to get the connex box the twenty to thirty mile from where it is loaded, to the port and from the port to the unloading location then it costs to ship a container 4000 miles around the world.

I could have containerized the cars and shipped them from Norfolk, but I would have to rent a box. There is no direct Norfolk or East Coast shipping to Hawaii. The container would have probably gone through three to 4 hubs, Norfolk, Charleston, Panama, Long Beach before it got to Hawaii. The process is very similar to how FEDEX and UPS route package. It could be 4-8 months before I saw my cars again. The other option would be for the connex box to be trucked or trained across country. That loses on scale as the trucker would have only been driving my two verse the 12 that were on the transporter. Training requires more agents, loading and unloading fees. In the end it is cheaper and easier to let Matson do it.

You made the right call! Every single project that has rust, has more than first thought. Doesnt mean it can't be fixed, but usually motivation is lost and then the project stalls. Congrats and enjoy! Oh and kudo's to Timewarp for helping out!

If you need any nos or nice reproduction parts for the r.c. you need to check dodge connection.com and also many repop body parts/floor pans can be had from sherman auto.com.... Love the 72-80 body style :)

How much rust is to much? Our 36 Ford coupe took the following repair.

Firewall

Complete floor pan & trunk pan

8" up the sides

So it's all in what you want. At that point in life. I had more energy than money!

You have to decide if you want to build or drive. There are plenty of serial builders who get off on this work and have the investment in tool and time to be hands. I bought an old car I had the hots for. It showed up and I didn't understand what I was looking at. There was enormous amounts of skillfully concealed rust. I think they had almost as much in concealing it as they would have had in doing it correctly. I finished and had finished that car and it drew a pretty penny from Sotheby's some time back, but I would have been far better had I chilled a bit and found the right vehicle to start. I learned a lot from it, but the lesson I took is that you are better off buying the right vehicle to start. I also learned that the old axiom of buying the finished vehicle you want will save you money. Hard to believe, but from what I've seen it is true. So, how do you want to spend your time and MONEY.?
