...for a columbian 5" vise WITHOUT a swivel base? It is in real good shape with the old style T-jaws but a little surface rust. However it is new enough that it does not say cleveland ohio, just "made in USA".

I think I could get it for a hundred bucks but I read here that you should only pay one dollar per pound.

thanks

Just a clarification, is it a vise that never had a swivel base, or one that originally had one and it's missing?

That would be my question too.

Assuming it never had the base, I would stick with the $1 per pound rule. I suspect that would put you in the $60 range.

I'm sorry...

It is not supposed to have a base, it is the 500 series columbian.

I didn't know if the fact is had 5" jaws that it would be worth more. It seems 4" or 4.5" vises are a lot more common then 5" vises.

Pay what you are willing to spend. To me it's worth $10-20 cause it can't rotate. If it did rotate, maybe $50.

Was at the hardware store last week and some of the Wiltons where $400-500... for a VICE? I big chuck of cast metal that clamps stuff. WOW!!. My $40 Craftsman and $50 Harbor Freight work just fine :)

To use some elses phrase, Columbians are like the Ford or Chevy's of the vise world. USA Made, they usually do whatever you need them to do, however their resale isn't high. There must be 20-30 on Ebay almost all resonably priced. I sold a 505 not long ago on CL for $65. Don't expect to make much unless its in exceptional condition.

I intend to use it, not sale it. I want one outside.

I do like to buy better quality if I can get a good price. The cool factor does play a small role too in my decisions.

Are columbians of this vintage not considered to be of the best quality? I guess since they are more common they don't quite have the cool factor either.
