If you are trying to figure out how many "yards" for a certain area.

You would multiply the length x width x depth, divided by 27 = the yards.

example: 24' x 24' x.5 =288 / 288 divided by 27 = 10.6 yards total

So 24' x 24' , 6inches thick will use 10.6 yards.

There is also factors for compaction , and many other ways to calculate the yardage needed , but hopefully that helps.

once you have the number of yards you need call up a stone distributor and they can ball park the number of tons you will need. They charge by the ton, if I rember correctly I needed 11 yards and had 20 tons of #1 chrusher run delivered.... but i'm loosing my mind

as stated above,

take length x width x thickness in feet and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Figure 3900 pounds per yard for compacted stone. (non-compacted would be quite a bit less). So if you need a number for a compacted thickness, take 3900 times cubic yards, divide by 2000 (lbs per ton) and you'll get the tonnage. Most places sell by tonnage.

Once you get the total for cubic yards, you can multiply that number by 1.5 to 1.8 to get the tons. (The moisture & fines in the stone will be a variable.)

24'x 24'x .5' = 288 cf/27 = 10.6 cy x 1.8 = 19 tons
