How much would you spend on a knife?

If you carry a knife for protection it is pretty stupid. Even if you do use it for self defence you will most likely be charged for assault with a deadly weapon. If you pull it on someone and don't use it you can also be charged. When I carry a knife it is to cut stuff not someone.

VG-10 too brittle for EDC? That's spyderco's bread and butter steel...please explain why you think it's too brittle. I've never had any issues with it

VG10 Spyderco blades have a tendency to chip. I have a Police that I don't use a whole lot since I'm worried about snapping the blade, because it's so brittle compared to 154CM or S30V.

I haven't owned a Spyderco since they were using 440C, so I cannot comment of their use of VG-10.

I can comment on the VG-10 I have in my Fallkniven, and also what I've seen in Shun and Kai knives. In all circumstances there are chips in the edge after light usage, that I consider to be from brittleness in the steel, and not from too aggressive a grind angle. In all cases I found that the rounded over burr you would feel when steeling a used knife was smaller than would be expected from a more typical knife steel at the same level of use (comparing similar amounts of use to a Wusthof or Henckels Twin or Sabatier which are a little softer, or a Forschner which is much softer). This is ok, but once the burr exists in VG-10, I've seen that it would chip off when encountering a bone (heaven forbid your mother-in-law puts such a knife in the dishwasher with other utensils, the edge is literally ruined).

My Kyocera ceramic knives have less chips in the edge than my VG-10 knives, and I have really never had an edge chip issue on any other knife of any other alloy, except when some ******* whacked a piece of wrought iron with a Damasteel blade of mine one time.

That being said, from what I've seen, Spyderco uses a pretty steep grind angle, which could make the edge better supported in VG-10 (at the loss of some cutting ability), and I have found that VG-10 has one of the longest lasting edges I have ever seen. Also, the edge chips have been very small, and are sharp at the base. Most chips are almost too hard to see without magnification, and leave a sort of micro-serrated edge texture.

It could be much worse, but I'd be concerned about that in a carry knife.
I've already seen a 154CM blade snap in half when cutting a zip tie, so I'm not carrying VG-10.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say knives are a self defense weapon. They can be in dire situations, I meant to say that a gun is a primary self-defense weapon that has but one use, and that's what it should be used for. An edc knife, to me, is a tool that is used for many things. To carry one and not the other to me, doesn't make sense.

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I wouldn't use my gun to open a package, and wouldn't use a knife when the life of me and mine are on the line, either. They each have their place, and that's in my pocket!

Well that would certainly depend on the knife. Here is a matching pair custom made for me. They are a numbered pair. An Arkansas Tooth Pick and a Bowie Knife. They both feature Damascus Stell Blades, with a Mulkamay Hilts and Mastadon Ivory Handles. I made the Bubingua/Birdseye Maple Case.

All depends on the quality.. I bought some knifes from Germany, made in Solingen - I don't think they make them anymore,, they were Puma knives. Things of beauty, I paid about $200/knife and I would do it again if I could find them.
