How often do you guys use 1" drive tools?

Well I have pieced together a decent set of Snap-on 3/4" drive tools fairly cheap, and now am deciding whether i should start keeping an eye out for 1" drive stuff.

How often do you guys use anything bigger than 3/4" drive?

I'm slowly trying to piece together a 1" set. I use them on locomotives and in fact GE uses a 1" drive female that engages the flywheel that you can put a ratchet on and rotate the prime mover. If I wasn't working on locos I'd have no use for 1" drive.

When I did heavy equipment it was common but now just doing transport trucks it's only occaisionally and then only because the socket I'm using happens to be an inch drive version instead of a 3/4 dr version.

ive used 1" dr on larger heavy equipment that i used to work on, any more about the largest i need is 1 7/8 3/4 dr.

i use them trucks and equipment i have a HF set had for years never broke a one of them on a IR 1" gun they are not even impact sockets paid just under 200.00 for the set they go up to just under 3"

When I was mining we used them a lot but now that i'm going into drilling as an engineer I don't really have much use for them. I do buy them when they come up cheap though.

never, i dont know what i could use them for off the top of my head. Maybe axle nuts but I have all those sockets in 1/2 impact so i just hit them with my gun. Maybe if my compressor took a dump?

In the automotive and on most ag applications, NEVER.

The only thing I can even visualize on a farm implement are the nuts on the axle of a disk.

In reality, not at the present time, but if i come accross 1" drive snap-on sockets pretty cheap i will buy them just to have them. I'm sure i will need the stuff down the line, since I am not sure what my job holds for me in the future. A career change might be in order, and the next jump i was contemplating was to go work on heavy equipment.

I won a snap-on 1 inch ratchet head & handle on ebay the other day for $ 225. That means in have more money invested in a 1" ratchet than i do in all of my 3/4" Snap-on stuff combined, thanks to craigslist....

I did sell my KRL1003 and my Miller MM251 Mig welder, but i kept all the hand tools at my parents house while i was out pursuing other opportunities and forgot about them. Recently i've come to need them more and more, so i am glad i didn't sell everything off

A guy my friend works with was given one as payment for some work he did for a customer. It was a 1" non-directional gun. (A silver one, i think.) Freakin' awesome gun. I think they run about £3,500 around here.

Yeah, about $5000-6000 by the time we put the quick directional change and cover on it. Not to mention the rebuild after each race!

The one this guy had, probably never saw the light of day. It was brand new and boxed, i don't believe anyone had ever used it, and he (race car fabricator) had no use for that kind of gun. It's a beautiful piece though.

we just bought an IR spline drive and a new IR 3/4" gun, the 3/4 is so powerful i dont even get out the 1" or the spline drive anymore.

Yeah you'll find a lot of "unnecessary" stuff like that on a race team. You would not believe some of the time and money put into things like that.

I used to use 1" drive on the farm and on heavy equipment a few times a year. We used 3/4 drive more weeks than not. They were always the first tool you grabbed for lug nuts on tractors and combines. I've seen duals run down so tight the 1" IR gun would hammer a few times. I really think unless you are working heavy equipment you really don't need 1" for much.

I use 1'' drive everyday at work actually broke a 1 '' breaker bar the on friday...and a 4 ;1 anyway you average do it your selfer will never need it even if your working on heavy equipment that is a shop tool you dont need to supply yourself anyway

I have a 1" drive SWENCH, but haven't used it (no 1" drive sockets at home), however I have found my 3/4 drive SWENCH useful on occasion, as it works better than most air impacts.

Working on specialty equipment, I use 1" stuff about twice a year. We keep a small assortment 1" sockets - all special stuff for specific jobs. I never turn 1" drive by hand - even the cheap gun I have puts out like 1300 or 1400 ft/lb of torque which is better than all 4 people in the shop hanging on the biggest cheater pipe we have to break something loose....my opinion is buy 1" stuff ONLY if its a "must have" to get a job done.
