How often do you re-configure your tool box layout?

This question is for the pro mechanics among us. It seems every time I get a new tool I end up re- doing my whole box. How about you?

Not often at all. Maybe once every few years or when I run out of room to store tools that just arrived.

Every time I reach for a tool, because the one I need is always on the bottom of the pile.:)

Edit: I am not a pro, but I play one in my garage.

I almost never do although I'm now considering ditching all the plastic trays and holders to make more room. My box is about full.

I'm not a pro, but for tool QTY, I'm certainly at that level.

I've done some minor rearranging from time to time, but generally I won't do anything significant unless I add more storage that might affect the main box. It's been basically the same layout for ten years (when the 11 drawer roller was bought).

Recently I added a Craftsman 5 drawer roller from about 1954 that the kids and I restored, and I moved a lot of truly old stuff from the main box to that one, as it is going to get all my antique/early vintage tools with only minor exceptions. But that did not change the basic layout.

Since then I also added a fabed up pliers rack in the pliers/adjustable wrench drawer, so that drawer got rearranged from piles of similar pliers to rows and piles.

But I still consider the box organization to be pretty static.

When I worked in a shop the only time I changed the layout was when I traded up in boxes. After 24 years of my box sitting at the house and constant adds I still have the same layout. If I were to start all over I would change quite a bit; but as it is I could not imagine my tools any where else than where they are in this set of boxes.

I never use the trays the tools come in. If you have room for those trays you don't have enough tools!

Yeah' I've only had my current box a little over a year, maybe that's why, it's not close to full yet and I think I'm just trying to find something that works for me with the layout of this box

I've kept things pretty much the same for several years. I try to keep the same layout in my home toolbox, as my work toolbox. Makes it easier to reach for what I need without having to think which drawer it's in.

Oh, geeze, lemme think . . .
I bought my main Snap-On rollaway combo back in about 1978, so I've had it for 34 years now, and in that time, I bet I have re-arranged the tools in it . .. . . .
Never.
I stir them up when I am looking for something that has worked its way to the bottom of a drawer, but what comes out of and goes into each drawer has not changed in the last 34 years.

And I may not be a pro wrench now, but I was for more of those years than I want to remember.

The only time I re arrange is usually due to an expansion. I bought my tool box while I was in college and it pretty much stayed the same for 10 years. A few years ago I added a 3 drawer intermediate box that was too small and an overall pain in the ***. Last year I finally replaced my lower box & intermediate with the 41" HF box. Each of these upgrades resulted in a reorginization.

Currently my box is undergoing my first re-org without an expansion, mainly due to this place! I've been on a tool buying spree lately and I've been forced to reorganize in order to keep everything together.

i've kept the same basic layout in my work boxes since '86.
some changes were made when i moved into my last service truck in '04, but sockets wrenches have pretty much remained the same.
i tried to keep the same basic idea going on with my home boxes, but i have a lot more single wrenches/sockets/ratchets at home than i do at work.
it was a PITA when i moved out of my rental shop space back home to the garage. i had a lot less room for toolboxes at home, so i had to work with the space available.
