How old is it?

I recently bought a Starret Dail Indicator, a model 196 in a very used up wooden case w/ accoutrements. The dial face does not have an identifying mark as to standard or metric, rather it just has the Co. name & address. It is missing the snug and one of the tips is wrong for the set.

Looks like a fairly old version.

Slide-top boxes for precision tools were out of fashion by the 50's.

Look at that! They used to make styrofoam out of wood!

Lots of Starrett is still unchanged from generations ago. I've never seen any date codes...there are subtle differences in screw heads and such on the most modern versions. I think old catalogs may give clues because they note package type on some things, and on some old Starrett and B&S boxed items I have found such things as tiny date codes on the printed stuff with them, and once a 1936 calendar card issued by the company.
Are there Starrett and B&S freaks out there who are nuts about date clues, like Snap-on people??

Well, the box is pretty raunchy, the lens over the dial is plastic, but yellow w/ age, but no rust

Is there a way to have myself "pinged" or emailed if someone responds to a post or thread?

Dude, you need a better camera/lens. Pictures are too out-of-focus to make out anything.

Cool dial gage though.

Interestingly enough, I have the exact same indicator that I got from my Grandfather. I believe it was his father's. I've never seen another exactly like it until now.

yes the pic is horrible. the dial face is different from "zrexxer's". across the top is " The L.S. Starrett Co. " underneath that is "Athol, Mass. U.S.A. " there is nothing under the center point
